I've served on two juries - one a criminal, the other a civil (car crash). Funny story from the jury selection process for the criminal trial. They have a bunch of us sitting up in the box for questioning to see if we're in or out. I was observing the defendant, who seemed entirely disinterested in the whole thing - to the point that I thought he was falling asleep. They're going through asking all of us if we know or recognize anyone in the room...judge, attorneys, defendant, whatever. When they get to the lady next to me, she indicates that she thinks she recognizes someone but isn't certain. Judge asks her to explain..."Well, I work at a local elementary school. Every Monday they give us printouts of the people on the sexual offender list who lives within a mile of the school. I think the defendant was on the flyer last week."

He apparently was not sleeping and was indeed paying attention, because he sprung out of his seat, slammed his hands down on the table in front of him, and yelled "NOOOOOT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!" :D
Judge spent the next 5 minutes making it very clear that the defendant was most definitely NOT on that list and going through all of the jury pool making sure that we would not be influenced against the guy over that case of mistaken identity.

The judge was a pretty good friend of mine who hung out in the same social circles as me, I was a bit surprised that I didn't get tossed because of that.

Reactions: Jimmy McGill
I got summoned last year and figured as a lawyer they'd bounce me pretty quick. But neither side asked my occupation and I ended up on the jury and ultimately foreperson. Fairly low stakes aggravated misdemeanor case. Pretty interesting experience and bizarre case of the most messed up road trip ever to go terribly awry. Some of the jurors left me uninspired about the whole jury system though. The state absolutely did not meet its burden on one of the counts, but a couple jurors kept saying I just feel like he did something wrong. I think I read them the jury instruction about the state's burden/reasonable doubt maybe ten times.

My Dad used to sit on the couch reading through the questionnaires filled out by potential jurors, while we'd watch a movie or sports, and every 30 minutes or so he'd toss them down and look at the ceiling saying, "Holy sh**, is the average American so incredibly stupid" and even sometimes share the dumb sh** grown adults would answer on them. Good times.

You might be surprised. I have heard of some lawyers being empaneled.

That's crazy they will let lawyers like you and @Jimmy McGill on juries.

Being the son and brother of prominent attorneys has gotten me dismissed incredibly fast both times I was summoned.
