Got to Hand it to Molinaro

Agree. Congrats to Frank and all the others that won yesterday and reached their intermediate goal. They did what they did to get their goals accomplished.

That said, I wish they would do a true double elimination tournament similar to the college world series. I think that would give us the best chance to put the best possible Team USA on the mat. Freestyle is a style where the best guy doesn't always win. Pico was almost teched in the first period of the first round vs. Ness and came back to win that match and made the finals - maybe should have been our representative. It may not have changed the results yesterday, but it does prevent our best guy from having an early bad match or loss to a bad matchup from being eliminated early. It also gives us the best chance to have our best guy to represent us. After an early loss, their is no way to get back to the championship and results on the backside are probably not really representative of the results if it was a true double elimination tournament.

My feeling is that the USA is not at the top of the freestyle heap on a consistent basis for obvious reasons. A few guys shine here and there for us, but we are not feared in the freestyle world. So with that as my backdrop, anyone who cannot get out of the first round of the US trials let alone win it is probably not going to win a medal at the Olympics anyway against the great freestyle countries, which is the ultimate goal. The very fact that we have not qualified the weight yet tells me that probably no one that wrestled yesterday is/was going to medal in August because other countries have great participants themselves. Very much hope I'm wrong for Frank's sake, but that is how I read the tea leaves.

Why don't you congratulate Frank and spare us the Mr. Obvious analysis and backhanded slap at Metcalf. [BTW, Brent got a bye in the 1st round]

Congrats to Frank. He clearly put in the work. Hope he gets to Rio!

I know Brent had a bye, which is why my comment was not directed at him! Just simmer down. The intent of that sentence says that I don't believe anyone from a first round loser to the winner likely medals in August, but I hope I'm wrong. Is that more clear? Sheesh...

Amen. See the Barber who did Bo's hair. Also, no grabbing the crotch in victory while in Mongolia...it's part of the male mating ritual over there.
I bet Pico winds up qualifying the weight.
If I'm not mistaken the next qualifier is in 2 weeks with the next a week later. If Tank fails in the 1st attempt I don't think the best option is to have him make weight and compete again a week later. Hopefully the USAW plan is to have the next guy/gal step up at all weights that need to be competed at the last qualifier.

I would think the best scenario would be to send the guy with the most motivation to qualify the weight, and that guy is Molinaro. I'm sure all of them don't go into a tournament to lose, but I'd want the guy with the most to gain being the rep.

Unless you're Jordan Burroughs or John Smith, you'll need some luck along the way to win these Trials or qualify a weight. Maybe Molinaro caught lightning in a bottle this day, or maybe he turned a corner (he can thank Pico for sure for not being ready at the whistle).

I guess the main thing is that it gets qualified, but Molinaro should be the guy to do that, IMO. But I will defer to you and others as far as the making weight deal and what possible effect that could have.

I read that under USA wrestling rules only the OTT can qualify the weigh unless he or she is injured. Confirmation?

I would think the #2 would still have some motivation. Olympic dream not over yet as they would be an injury or other circumstance away from being the guy. After coming this far I don't see them giving up on it just like that. Dream ends if weight not qualified though.

I just think in a lot of cases the #2 would probably be the best option for the last tournament as opposed to a wrestler traveling, making weight and competing consecutive weeks.

The two qualifying tourneys are two weeks apart.

Think he was on the receiving end of a crotch grab by Pico at the very end of their first match.

Brent was gracious enough to congratulate Molinaro in his interview, and I agree that we should follow his lead. Kid wrestled the tournament of his life at exactly the right time. Hats off to him.

When is the last time someone like Molinaro came completely out of nowhere to claim a spot? Can't think of any in recent memory. Maybe Ramos last year.

FIFY. Molinaro has always been around...just never put it together. Cox would be like Ramos.
