Watching the National Championship the, defense is very impressive. The Zags are rated #1 by Pomeroy with NC at #16. We are rated #122 by Pomeroy which happens to be the worst in the conference. This is where we have the most room for improvement. Garza in the middle could be the biggest step as well as improvement and weight gain by Kriener. We gave up way too many layups last year. Granted we were the youngest teams in conference and in the country so just the year of experience will be helpful. Then i wonder if the coaching staff needs to rethink our defensive philosophy?

No need to rethink. Past seasons have shown this staff can coach defense. Our rebounding is going to improve, our defense is going to improve.

You answered it yourself. A very young team. No need, to rethink. Trust Fran. :)

Yeah, I'm not looking to a single freshman to make us defend better. It's the improvement we'll see from the sophomores and juniors to be that will drive our improvement.

Moss was our best perimeter defender and will get more of Jok's minutes. Cook and Pemsl will significantly improve inside.

I'd also point out that we turned it over more with a young team, which will also likely improve.

The NC game was indeed a showcase of how playing D should be done. Nothing easy to the glass and everything contested around the rim. UNC did a great job containing Karnowski who they basically shut down.
I would guess our D will definately improve next year with a year of experience under our belts.

Thought I read in the last 10 final fours, no team ranked lower than 25 in defensive efficiency has made the final four. Probably dreamt that. But yes, defensive improvement will be key to success next year

Team defense. We have ZERO lock down defenders. Guys have to buy in and get better on that end.

If we don't we will be another bubble team.

Past seasons we had much better defensive players.

The years before Mike G, Woody and Clemons we were atrocious on D, worse than this year.

Those guys + Uthoff showed up knowing how to play D and we had 4 pretty good years of defense.

I hope Fran can get these new guys to play D. Its a tall task.

Or we had an inside presence in Woody and a years experienced Olaseni. Which we didn't have in 2016/17.

The most obvious things in the TCU game were freethrows and turnovers. Need to improve those two areas for sure.

Watching the Tourney it is evident that team defense is a big factor in success.

Positionally the guards need to defend the three and shoot the three. The bigs need to have jump hook and a mid range game or teams will simply sag off and help which shuts off penetration.

We have lots of pieces and I think a lot of guys take a nice step forward next year.

This is false. This was our worst defensive efficiency year in the last 15 years.

But how was the ranking? DE overall in the country fluctuates wildly from year to year. IIRC, they were like .1 worse this year than 2012, but ranked 122 compared to in the 200s in 2012. So which is worse?

Fran has shown the ability to use an offseason to turn a weakness into a strength. Given a year of growth for a young roster, combined with the bigs coming in, I am very confident that they improve greatly on the defensive end.

Oh, there's a little trick there. :) 2011/12, we did indeed rank 206 with a DE of 101.7. But 2016/17? We finished 102.6, worse but somehow better at #122! :D

Now, what happened to cause a strange thing like that? I'm giving you 35, no 30, seconds to answer that question!!!

So honestly, I think we've gotta compare apples to apples and if 2011/12 was #206? And they were. They stunk more.

And hence my point. Regardless of the actual number, if you are 206th you are worse than if you are 122nd.

To put it in baseball parlance, would you rather lead the league with a .906 OPS or finish 20th with a 1.015 OPS?

I'm just saying, if I can do the same thing two separate times, I don't get better just because other people do worse one of the times.

I won't argue that this year's defense ranked better compared to competition, but it was a worse defensive team.

Not in relation to every other team in basket ball compared to 2012.

Seriously?

Thats surprising. Those first few years couldn't have been much better.

I obviously didn't look it up but I remember some games against Indiana that were just layup drills.

I know that Iowa improved significantly on defense the year Mike, AC and Woodbury got here.

They were good defensive players from day 1.

Thats how I remember it. Bad.

Cartwright made JBO and Jok look like Gary Payton and Scottie Pippen.

Team defense has little to do with having lock down defenders.

That's what I am saying, we have ZERO guys that can shut down their man. Every single one of Iowa players would of been smoked last night by either team. Their lateral movement, instincts, whatever is poor. I don't know if Fran only focuses on one end of the floor when recruiting, but our guys cannot guard 1 on 1 vs anyone.

So team defense has to improve. I mean watching JBO (love the kid and think he will get better) getting smoked by the TCU pg was frustrating. That kid could of taken it to the hole every time if he wanted to. Fran had to go to zone a lot this year and we still got burnt by it.

Defense has to improve all across the board.

A year in the weight room for the freshman will help a lot.

Defensive rotations in man and zone will improve as the kids figure out that it is important.

I think we see a large improvement next season. Just from experience of the importance of learning how to play help defense.

I can guarantee you that if the Hawks had played defense like that in any game they would have been called for a thousand fouls.
