Coaching Carousal Closed For This Year

Cincy made the four team. Either ASU or ISU are gonna make it this year, along with Indiana, SMU and Boise State. Iowa should make it at least once in the next few years.

If Alabama makes it in again this year we might as well just accept they'll make it every year.

It would be interesting to estimate how many times we likely would have made the current 12 team format over past 25 years. Too lazy but at least 3 but not more than 5?

Realize it’s a bit of a guess some years.

I think of 2002, 2009, 2015, and 2021 . That 2021 squad got up to number two after beating Penn State. What happened after was like the engine just falling out after a good 250 at Daytona or Indy.

2015 was the year people coined the term " new Kirk". But Alabama would've been the times worse than that Stanford result. Dantonio was never the same after his Spartans got trounced.

That leaves 2009 and 2002 as Kirk's best teams. I think it would've been interesting to see Ohio State vs USC and Iowa vs Miami in 2002.

As far as 2009 goes, Kirk played it way too safe against Ohio State. That was one that got away. I think Iowa could've hung with Texas or Alabama. Remember Texas had to play a backup freshman and really should've lost to Bo Pelini in the Big 12 title game.

That 2009 Alabama team wasn't the offensive dynamo they would become. I would've taken Stanzi over McElroy. Iowa has the defense to slow down Mark Ingram as well. What USC did to them in 2002 was not Alabama's strength at the time.

So I would say four real prime years would result in two good chances to at least win a game in the playoff. Especially a twelve team playoff.
