Greenwood making strides

What a devastating injury. Yet, despite his circumstances, Brett has fought to improve himself, demonstrating tremendous grit and perseverance, with able assistance from Coach Doyle and others. He is an inspiration to me.

Go Brett!!!

Kinda dusty in here.

What happened to him? I knew he had some health issues but never realized it was to this extent.

Is there still a contribution site?

Four years ago, he collapsed while working out at his high school. He had a heart condition (previously unknown?) and was unconscious for a while before being found. He had some severe neurological complications as a result.

My understanding is that he was doing some private workouts to stay in shape for an attempt to join an NFL roster whenever an opportunity arose.

I miss safeties like Greenwood. We haven't had one in a while. He had a high football IQ and great awareness. He always put himself in a position to make plays. I've heard a lot of people while he was playing say he just in the right place at the right time. Well, he was always in the right place at the right time, so it wasn't him just being lucky. He was there because he put himself there to make a play.

When I would watch him play, it always felt like Greenwood knew things that no one else on the field knew. I'm not sure how much what happen has effected his brain as far as knowledge, because I think he would make a great football coach.

You don't have to be fast when you're already there. That's been a staple of some of our best safety play over the years. Smart football players.

You come to appreciate how solid he was at safety after these past few years.
True. When lightly recruited Iowa players that contributed to the Iowa program get mentioned on this board, I don't think Greenwood is ever mentioned. This includes me. After watching his highlight clip I was impressed! Not that he could make those plays, but I think we forget the number of key stops he had. End zone plays, fourth down stops, game ending plays, etc. I would guess that for every play shown on the highlight clip he was CLOSE on many others. Keep working and get healthy!

I would add that I don't remember saying "Damn it, Brett!" much (if ever) because he blew an open field tackle or allowed a receiver to get behind him. A lack of such mistakes is just as important for a good player as making the big play.
