Guard play: PER 40

Sorry about the formatting. Joe T is an elite defender and a much better assist man than he gets credit for. Imagine if he got big minutes with luka.
His turnover PER is not out of line with his other production as you can see by comparing him to other.

I commented on here a few weeks ago that he is playing at a much higher level this year. His minutes and stretches of getting benched have been baffling, particularly when you see the level the other guards playing over him are playing at. Hope he says here for next year, but one has to wonder if he will considering transferring.

Ahron: 5.4 reb. 6.7 assist. 1.5 steal. 2.6 turnover. shooting 37 from 3 and 32 from 2

joe t shooting 37 from 3 and 45 from 2
Jordan 35 from 3 and 38 from 2.
I think season stats are somewhat meaningless given the quality of non con opponents. Conference stats paint a clearer picture of what's been going on.

agree to a point. Fran doubles down on his own choices, it's hard to get a chance.

In some cases I agree where minutes and opportunities are very limited. Jbo, Joe, and Ulis have all played substantial minutes in conference play and those stats more closely reflect how each has performed over the past month and against higher level competition. JBO's conference stats show that he hasn't been shooting 35% from 3 in conference play. He's shooting 25%. Ulis has an EFG% of 29% which is worst on team compared to 36% for Jbo and 44% for Joe. Assists-turnovers are almost identical between Joe and Ulis. Joe collects steals at 3 times the rate of either one. Joe's PER is 15.5 vs 12 for Ulis and 7 for Jbo. Joe is far from perfect but he's still closer to it than other guard we have by a pretty fair margin.

I don't disagree, I think joe should have played more every year here.
I think the stats I listed are painting the same picture you are other than shooting.

OP suggests that MG should not have been the whipping boy that he became. He was not a great shooter, but a very solid defender and ballhandler. Fran strategy leaving Mike holding the ball at the end of games, repeatedly put him in a position that was not his strength. He was a team player, not a individual playmaker. Mike G deserved a lot more respect than he got.

Frans offenses never seem to work that well when they need a basket late against a set D.

I always thought Mike was a solid all around guard but he wasn't a great 1 or 2.

He was the perfect guy for a 3 guard lineup.

If Fran could have gotten Paige to go with Woodbury and Gesell the trajectory of Iowa basketball probably looks a lot different.

Frans been 1 player away a few different times. Imagine if Ahrons older bro chose iowa as well…

So Fran comes here talking about the importance of great guard play and all the great former Iowa guards. He wants to run, shoot 3's and play NBA style because that is what appeals to kids. What have we seen over 12 years? Brutal guard recruiting, talent better suited for Wisconsin's style of play than run and gun, and damn near laughable defense coupled with poor fundamentals.

When Fran has found a couple guys, he he has squandered them by not seizing the opportunity to bring another 1-2 guys in via transfers or recruit over underperformers. It took a monumental effort for Fran to do so little with Garza and JW, but he rose to the occasion. You can hate on WI all you want, but Gard would have gotten that team to the Sweet 16 at least once if not twice.

Fran allegedly turned the corner with the Hutton, Moss, Williams, Fleming and Wagner class and we know how that turned out. The names are different with Perkins, Joe T, Ulis and Josh and Mulvey, but the results are going to similar. Joe T is similar to the up and down Moss and Perkins works hard like Wagner, but has a limited skill set to draw upon and the others just aren't very good. Mulvey gets a pass given he should be a senior in high school, but he is at least 2 years out from contributing given the body transformation that has to happen.

You want text book bone headed coaching, see this season. Iowa loses the NPOY and has a starting 5 spot open at the P5 level and we get Rebraca who plays hard, but gives up way too much size. Result = Iowa gets destroyed on the boards. 6 years of Jbo not being able to create his own shot, but Fran thinks moving him to the 2 is the answer. Result=Jbo still can't create his own shot, Fran can't get him looks in the offense and the 2 guard, aka "shooting" guard has to jack deep 3's or get fouled in order to have any chance to score.

Definitely need to lock Fran up for another 12 years. He will get us back to the NIT Sweet 16 at some point.

The stat site i use doesn't have conference per for players older than gesell. Anyone know of a site?
