Show of hands, how many people watched the game and heard, repeatedly, "Guard who brings the ball up most of the time."?

Are we now starting to understand that the plan all along was positionless basketball.

No names mentioned, but we've been fretting over point guard play like old guys in 1910 trying to tie horses on horseless carriages.

Times change.

Yeah just look at the most successful college teams for the past five years. None of them had stud PGs. Times change.

Wisconsin does alright with Combo Guard Koenig.

Melo Trimble, Bryant McIntosh....I could go on and on. Combo Guards.

Villanova? Did alright with two Combo Guards didn't they?

You want a "traditional" point guard that sets people up? It's getting harder and harder to tell exactly who that is on a team.

Duke: Was it Grayson Allen last year? 3.5 apg out of 13
Kentucky: Tyler Ulis? Yes, traditional point guard. 7 apg out of 14
Kansas: Was it Mason or Graham? 4.6/1.9 or 3.7/1/7? 12.9 ppg or 11.3? They both played over 32 mpg? Who was the point guard?

Fact. McCaffery has said we don't want a guard that we have to stop and wait while he gets back up top to set up the offense.
Fact. We're even planning on many of our bigs taking the ball on the fast break.

Stud GUARDS Childress. And not being used exactly like the old model of a point guard anymore.

I think our PGs will be okay bringing the ball up, but once the pressure kicks in, then it will be a challenge. I think JBO will struggle as well CW. I hope Fran can use a mis-match (ISU ala Niang) bringing the ball up vs a post player. Maybe Cook or Uhl can do that against their guy. I am worried to play a "pressing" team right now.

I agree, I just hope that the guys get that the key to breaking a press is passing and we don't get caught trying to dribble the ball. I would like to see Cook or Wagner waiting for the ball at the back of a press, though. We could make some teams pay if we don't panic. One guy isn't going to do much to stop them, unless that one guy is an elite defender/blocker.

Edit to add. That's also where an almost 6'7" guard who used to play quarterback could be very useful.

Fran has recruited a lot of traditional PG's. I think he, like most coaches, would still want one.

Yes, and nothing I haven't said. Talking game style here. And Fran has said as much himself, publicly, interviewed, might as well be carved on a rock. We're not interested in one guy holding the ball, calling out plays.

THIS! Far too often teams try to beat the press dribbling. Nobody can run as fast as the ball gets passed/thrown.
Key is to put a front court player right in the middle of the court, when or if the guard receiving the in bounds pass is double teamed the middle is usually wide open. Then that front court guy just needs to turn around and one of two corners will usually be wide open.
Good spacing and good passing will make teams drop out of their full court press fast or get eaten alive.

Where were you 1987-1999?

Regarding the press, I mentioned having a tall ex-quarterback with the ball in his hands. Wouldn't it be nice if on the other end we had an athletic, quick first step, ex-receiver, AND a big guy like say, 250 pounds to block for him? :)

Could be we see better completions than...well, not going there.
