Has anyone heard

One thing we've learned about Fran is that he likes to have a low mistake guy coming off the bench - low risk low reward. That tends to lead us fans to wonder why McCabe is seeing time over Basabe or Olaseni, or why Oglesby saw more time than Jok or why Ellingson sees time over Fleming or Williams, but the pattern is there and it makes sense.

I'll continue to stand by Williams and say that Iowa fans will be delighted he is our point guard next year. As to rankings, it depends on who you look at but Williams was not entirely low ranked.

The only surprise I've had this year is that Flemings hasn't worked his way into quite a few minutes. But, that is the risk one takes in guessing at future results of freshmen.
Definitely looks like a decent offensive team next year that will struggle on defense.

Williams, Moss, Jok, Uhl, Cook would be a pretty long, athletic team. Wagner, Baer, Ellingson, Fleming, Hutton, Pemsl, Bohannon, Kreiner....that's a pretty young but talented lineup. Can't really say that any of them don't belong.

Bohannon will help stretch the court out more on offense.
Pemsl can bring some low block scoring but needs to refine his body a bit.
Kreiner is more athletic than people think, just needs to refine the mental part of his game.

I think the team will be fun to watch and could surprise later in the year, we just need to keep our expectations reasonable. They would have an outside chance of making the NCAA's but I don't think anyone would bet on it.

Really like these two posts and I too continue to stand by CWilliams at that PG position. I think if Williams stays the course at Iowa he can impact this program at that PG position in the same way DValentine is right now for MSU. V did play a lot more his freshman year than Williams (20 minutes to 4.5 per game) but the bigger impact did not start happening for MSU with V at that PG position until last year. He struggled and improved through the years like most kids do but you got to be on the floor playing and Williams will get his chance in a big way next year maybe comparable to mpg that V played his soph year at 29 mpg? V averaged 5 ppg his freshman year, 8 ppg his soph year, 14.5 his junior and now this year's #s which are great.

It's going to be a different path for Williams than V but the skills and talents are there. He's big, long, good handles which will get better, can shoot the outside 3 and really like his ability to get to the rim much like what you see V doing but this may be Williams best attribute, he can finish on the drive and above the rim. He just needs to get more aggressive and he will with more time on the floor. He was the man on his HS runner-up Illinois State Champion team and zero reason for me to think Williams will not become the man of many others on this Iowa team.

Moss is like this too, a bit longer than Williams but man do I like the moves and the way he can attack and finishes at the rim and another guy who can explode above the rim.....check out his vids. Impressive. If he is getting bigger physically....I can't wait to see what he can do.

But like Dan is saying....let's keep expectations reasonable.

Obviously we are 9 months away from all these hypotheticals and a lot can happen between now and then. I think Pemsl and Kriener both redshirt next season. We saw how long it took for Peter to get 100% healthy and I think an extra year would do Pemsl a lot of good. I know he is putting up some outstanding numbers this season but he was severely limited athletically after seeing him at the State Tourney last year. Let him compete and gain confidence in the program next year and be ready to contribute in 2017/18.

I think between Uhl, Wagner, Jones, and Cook 5 spot will be alright. This will give Kriener another year to acclimate. The reason I RS Kriener and play Cook down low is that Cook is light years more athletic than Kriener. I watched Woody and Kriener play in high school. Neither screamed that they were D1 ready. Woody played right away out of necessity and because he is 7-1. Kriener can sit a year because we do have bodies to put at the 5 spot and he is only 6-9. I think having Uhl and Jones playing some 5 will really stretch the defense and allow Fran to be really creative offensively.

This may be true or appropriate for one year while a player develops, but the man crush needs to end when the player is passed by someone else. The love fest for Oglesby last two years too long and McCabe probably one year too long. Hopefully, this does not continue with Ellingson as the skill set for BE is only average at best. As much as people talk about Moss or Hutton or the incoming guys, there has to be someone with more upside.

Fran is a bit stubborn with these things. He does not make adjustments very often or very quickly. You can see it with his use of timeouts, coaching in the last 4 minutes, substitution pattern or his use of certain player. It is almost like Ferentz is his mentor and says "we are going to do the same thing every game and every year, but our plan is to just do it better than you"

Some truth to that last paragraph...........

This could be too and I think the net of all this good discussion is there are sooooo many options and good players/talent who could impact this team in 2016/17. Yea, it's bit inexperienced and young and maybe a gap here or there in skill sets or the look of the lineup but it's a different roster than any we've had at Iowa or in a long time and certainly a different skill set of talent for this coaching staff to work with?

One poster was mentioning Hutton and yea, maybe he's the player who tears up PTL this summer and is the bigger impact player next season? The nice thing is he'll have a year on campus under his belt and comfortable with Iowa City with school and surroundings and Iowa BB......just get after it playing hoops. Really looking forward to see what happens?

Williams is going to be a very good pg for the Hawks, imo. His skill set is similar to Dev Marble's and he is a better athlete. Williams, Moss and Jok will be a handful for opponents next year which will help the other guys on the interior. It will be fun to watch these guys grow together.

Except for Pete, who is going to have to adjust to being THE man without experienced guys around him to cover for his mistakes and set him up for shots, the rest of the team is a giant question mark. Good news is that the cupboard is not bare. The coaches will need to develop already talented players and mold them into a team. It will be fun to see what they come up with.

Moss was supposed to be the highest ceiling player talent wise, in this recruiting class if I remember correctly. Followed by Fleming and Wagner. Hutton probably ranked the lowest. Still surprised Fleming hasn't been able to get on the floor more this year.
If you had watched any of the games he has been on the floor I think that would answer your question....Hutton is a lock down defender so he will find his niche....Fleming hopefully will develop and get his confidence back, but from what we have seen in actually games the kid has struggled. He was one of the PTL all stars that fans get way to excited about and have unrealistic expectations

Of course Fran would like to be playing some different guards. Ellingson has been the best of the lot and Fran did not play him the last game. Williams and Fleming have both looked lost in limited playing time and I think we can all see that. Now is not the time to be trying new rotations.

Of course Williams looks a bit lost. He has been adapting to Iowa's system and trying to conform to being a PG after playing a point forward/shooting guard role throughout his high school career in Illinois lower class level. The defenses in lower level ILHS ball is not as intense or challenging as 3A or 4A like Moss and Hutton endured. Upper crust teams in 3A ILHS ball is like 4A level in Iowa and top 4A ILHS ball teams until travel to multiple out- of state tournaments (national competition exposure).

Williams could have a similar Devyn Marble reformation during the summer/ offseason. However, Bohannon is going to be spot Williams for around 12 to 15 minutes a game next year. That about the max Bohannon should be on the floor.

After this season when all of our recruit are 5 star, top 100 guys, we won't have to worry about these petty issues anymore.
