If so I apologize in advance.......What are your thoughts when up 3 with little time on the clock? I say foul as to not let the 3 ball tie it up. Too many things need to happen to lose a game if you foul. Now, not a dumb foul but make sure it's a one & one. Thoughts please.

Depends on your personnel. In the SFA vs WVU game, SFA couldn't box out... you don't risk that. If you've got great rebounding, then I'm for fouling with under 5 seconds.

It depends how much time is left. If under 10 seconds then yes, you should absolutely foul, giving them a max of 2 points as long as you rebound any missed FT's. Then by the time they foul you again and get the ball back they have next to no time left. If 20 or more seconds then play good D and don't foul.

I would foul ever time if say there was gonna be very little or no time left after the shot. Definitely do not pull a Clemmons and wait till they are in shooting motion. There are so many things that has to go perfectly if they are shooting free throws when you are down by three for you to end up tying the game. Has to make the first, miss the second intentionally hitting the rim, getting the rebound and still having to score 2. I would do it every time.

If its a one-and-one situation its really a no-brainer. The pressure to make the first one is intense and like KW said from there so much has to happen. If its a double bonus situation, since there doesn't seem to be a penalty for fouling someone who doesn't have the ball, i would make sure my guys knew who we wanted at the line and make sure we foul him ball or not.

From the couch, it certainly seems like the better move strategically to foul. I don't think most college coaches trust their guys enough to do it right to actually call for them to do it. Same thing with the 2 for 1 situations at the end of the half, its the right play, but you rarely see it.

The 2 for 1 is one that kind of drives me nuts, I don't know why more college coach's don't try to utilize getting the extra possession.

Foul if down to 5 or 6 seconds. Not so sure that is what we were trying to do when Clemmons fouled the three point attempt, but was about 2 seconds too late.

In theory, I agree with the 2 for 1, but not at the expense of rushing and taking a bad shot for that purpose.

Coaches and other "experts" disagree. And that's because I don't think there can be a single answer. It depends on time, opponent, your own personnel. Lots of moving parts. So I think the answer is that sometimes fouling is the right strategy, and sometimes it isn't. The hard part, as usual, is realizing which is which.
