Company made it 2 months without any changes to labor but my office admin team of 45 has to finally lose a couple resources.

Worst part of the job, they were the last two hired but it’s never easy.

Did someone else or you make the choice that last 2 persons hired would be let go.
Was their performance not as good as the rest or was it just a case of being low man on the
seniority list?

their direct managers selected them, least performing of the groups and happen to be last hired.

I let someone go right around the time all this covid stuff started but it was not covid related it was performance. I do feel bad that it happened with this timing but she had control on her performance and had many opportunities. But still never fun as I am sure she has not been able to find something.

Sucks but at least they should be able to get unemployment if I'm not mistaken.

I don't know because I've never actually taken unemployment in my life. But I'm pretty sure being laid off because the company can't afford you anymore qualifies you.

OP to these 2 laid off employees.

I don't think you understand, OP is going to terminate the employees themselves so they won't be able to file a claim against the employer.

So the company is letting them go because they can't afford them but they have decided to call it performance related just to leave them high and dry.

Nice system we live in.

I may be wrong but I think terminated employess can certainly get unemployement in most, if not all states. Depends on the reason for being fired I believe.

This and the Peter Principal are real things.

I really saw LIFO at work 2008-2010. The engineering firm I was at then had a bunch of 45-60 year old Senior PMs and PMs along with similar admin folks that had been around for decades that were not good, had no clients, and were higher salary cost being kept at the expense of the younger, better and cheaper 30-45 year old ones that had been there 1-5 years. All because they and the decision makers had been friends for so long. It was something to behold. I left there late 2012-the firm never really came back and is now just a local engineering firm when once it was a multiple state regional one with 6 offices. It went from 175 to 25 people.

Sooooooooo……. How did it go??

And this was one of the biggest reasons I got out of management. Even if someone deserved it, it was never easy to fire someone.
