The wife and I will be in Honolulu in September for a work trip. Company pays for flights and 3 night stay for conference in Honolulu.

Question I have is we are wanting to extend our stay a few days (probably 3). Maybe get to a different/smaller island. Neither of us have been to Hawaii before. We are looking for recommendations on islands/hotels/areas to extend our stay? Anybody with travel experience to Hawaii that can help a brother out?

Maui, Kauai, or the big Island. If you can add on more than 3 days, do it.

I would stay on Oahu. You will be busy enough with the conference that you most likely won't have that much time to enjoy the island. The first day you can expect to be pretty jet lagged. Save the money and time that you would spend island hopping and checking in at a new resort and rent a Jeep and explore the city and the North Shore.

You won't be jet lagged if you're flying from the mainland unless you're terribly concerned about waking up at 4 am every day. Going back home will be the problem for you.

If you can, take one day to visit the north shore and Pearl Harbor, then go to another island. Having lived there for 4 years, Oahu is the least "Hawaiian", fun, or relaxing of any island. You have to plan your day around the traffic and it's one big mess of tourists and homeless.
Lanai is my favorite, Maui (Wailea) comes in 2nd.
It all depends what you're looking for on your days off.
Inter island flights are 30 mins to any island, and the airport is relatively easy to get through. It is hardly an inconvenience.
Last, don't try to do Hawaii on a budget. Nothing is cheap and you'll just stress yourself out worrying about it. Splurge and enjoy paradise.

I'm with Chris. People dismiss Oahu pretty quickly, but it's my favorite Island. There's easily 3 days worth of stuff to do there.

Is this Hawaii?
