Hawkeye tweeting tonight.....

Iowa fan for nearly 60 yrs. sick of ferentz. None of what you said justifies having 20 on the roster

It doesn't matter how many are on the "roster". They are only allowed to take 105 guys to camp. It doesn't matter a lick how many walk-ons there are if they aren't dressing out or on the sidelines for a home game. As several people have already pointed out, Iowa now has five on scholarship. Every scrimmage position is at least three deep. In that Iowa regularly uses two TEs in every game, that would require at least six. Hell, I was complaining last recruiting season that they weren't taking one in the 2018 class.

But you're not an Iowa fan. You're an ISU/Minnesota fan with no life that blocks people from your profile so they can't see that all you do on this site is troll Iowa athletics.

It's really, really sad man.
So far off. I certainly do not blindly follow. I form my own opinion and don’t allow the media or the crowd or hype form it for me

Anyone got the inside scoop on this one, seems like we have too strong a Solon connection to yank a scholarship from a kid from there.
Who said anything about a scholley being yanked. I ignore several people, so someone very well may have said that.

It will certainly open up a scholarship.
It sounds like an issue with academics .... but it's not clear that he's fully away from the program. Maybe he has the intention of improving his academics and then rejoining the program? Irrespective, it would appear to open up a ship ... at least in the short term.

I hope this scholly will go to Ben Subbert. I thought he deserved one out of HS. He looks legit.
My guess is this scholly will go to Sargent, as I'm pretty sure they were still at 85 before it was announced Sargent was on campus. I could be wrong though....

No.. your participation in the B12 Implosion thread makes it pretty clear that you're a troll from another team. But hey, more power to you if posing as an Iowa fan on their message board and *****ing and moaning all the time makes you happy. I think it's weird, but whatever.

I'm seeing an argument that we're thin at TE
That we have too many TEs
That we have the right amount

Interesting social study, the number 6 (I'm assuming that's Cook/Fant/Hockenson/Beyer/Vejvoda/ . . . weiting or coons?) has a different meaning to everyone who applies it to the TE position.

And then there is the definition of the word "thin". Some people define it as not enough players at a position, some people define it as not enough proven talent at a position.

I think Iowa has enough talented players to win the west, but that's just me. It's all about game-day strategy and utilizing what you have. I hope our back-up QB gets some serious reps this year. That seems to be an issue every year and I can't figure out why?

Looking to the future ... I'd say that the Hawks are definitely IN NEED of new TEs in the '19 class. I expect that Fant will likely be able to leave early after the '18 season. Furthermore, I think that Hockenson could find himself in a similar position after the '19 season. Thus, while I'm high on guys like Beyer and Lee ... we're going to need more quality guys to be able to help out the new starting QB in 2020.

Coons is still going to classes in the fall to Iowa to concentrate on Academics.
BF is [from sources] wants to have and use the 3 TE sets. there are not [to many] as is being stated. in my opinion they need to get 2 TE's in each class. just like they need 1 QB in every class.

injuries can decimate the depth at TE [KNOCK ON WOOD].

Given the experience of Fant, Hockenson, and Wieting .... along with the fact that during bowl prep, Beyer was reputed to be a "big riser" ... that would suggest that we have 4 TEs who need to see the field. Add a talented athlete like Cook to the mix ... and you have possibly 5 guys who could legitimately vie for snaps. So yeah ... trying to utilize 3 TE sets ... and use it a flexible/multiple sort of way ... I can definitely see that happening in '18.

This is where the walk-ons come into play. Last year our best WR was a walk-on (who was put on scholarship, yes).
I get people always want to be 6 deep in Fant-type of TEs, but I'm not so sure we don't have an unknown on the team who is a budding star.
That's part of the issue deciding how deep Iowa is. I may be in luv with a starter, but if I don't see the back-up get quality minutes how do I know how good or bad he is?
2019 - Cook; Lee; Hockenson; Beyer; Wieting; Kujawa
I know one of them is pretty good, but I don't know enough about the rest. I like the blood lines of 2 of those guys. I've heard good things about a couple others.
I'll admit when guys graduate I tend to be optimistic about their replacements. Some are pessimistic. Some rightly say they don't know what to expect.
But overall I think KF usually has 85 guys with B1G-level ability. Plus, Kirk's strength imo is always having a nice roster of walk-ons. The program has enough depth that guys like AJ Derby; Sokol; Weigers; Rudock; DMX; Ryan Bain; etc. can't get the minutes they want and decide to transfer out. When you have a program that can cast off players of that caliber, you have a program with pretty good depth imo.

Very fine post ... and fair point!

Wieting at least was a walk-on ... I cannot recall if he's been put on 'ship yet. He's arguably our best blocking TE ... and he's likely capable of improving in the passing game too. Thus, I can appreciate that our walk-on TEs can definitely do good things for us too. Zach Derby was a pretty solid walk-on TE for us around 2010 and 2011 (or around there). Of course, Dallas Clark is a fan-favorite to bring up ... however, walk-on TEs aren't always quite as impressive as him.

I believe Coons was the kid Iowa offered very early that irked Oliver Martin and opened the possibility of him looking elsewhere.

Where did that information come from? I hadn't heard that. I know Iowa regretted the early offer but stuck by their word.

The way his post reads (at least to me), it looks like he wants to play football again, but probably not at Iowa.

The scholarship has been pulled?

To have scholarship pulled, an Iowa player would have to be kicked off the team, correct? I've always been under the assumption that once the ink is on the paper, and a kid remains in good academic and community standing, he'll graduate under scholarship unless he opts out. Isn't this correct?

I don't know what the rules are. The twitter thing was interesting though. Starts off with someone sounding like a victim, then a tweet where the student-athlete assumes responsibility for his current circumstance. I got more questions than answers. Boredom in June. The season needs to get here pronto.

I didn't know Iowa regretted it, but I know it was a major factor in him considering other schools. If he gets that offer, he would have been a hawk.

Thought the different posts were interesting. I'm sure there are some things that go on with the program that are borderline. Not everything is clean in evrery sense of the word. I respect the program for the most part but decisions get made and PR has to come into play.

I was talking about coon
I know. I didn't know Iowa regretted the offer to Coon, but I know it was a major factor in Martin considering other schools. If Martin gets that offer, he would have been a hawk.

No, if Martin wanted to be a Hawkeye, he would be a Hawkeye. He had that option and he declined. Period.
Lol. Nobody is saying otherwise. The decision making process is an incredibly complex series of experiences and inputs.

One of the experiences that led to Martin not wanting to be a Hawkeye was not getting an offer until after that other local prospect did. I'm not saying that's a good reason. I'm not making any judgments about it at all, I'm just saying that he would have wanted to be a Hawkeye if he would have been offered at that same time. Period.

Seems like a pretty dumb reason ... particularly because TE is a very different position than WR. I'd understand Martin being miffed if a different in-state WR got picked ahead of him ... but that wasn't the case.

I do remember rumblings that Iowa was a step behind with Martin because they offered later than some others.

Who knows, he was probably just looking for a reason to leave. I am really not too disappointed he is not a Hawkeye.

It does seem that the Oliver Martin threads tend to go on for a long time.
