Hawkeyes offer 2019 QB Easton Dean, an Iowa State commit

Alright we have identified 6 well qualified candidates and all appear to be solid. Imo the thing to do now is honor your ground with them but don't keep sending out ships. To steal a ferentzism "only one guy gets the ball" we have 3 very talented guys in the pipe right now if you cannot get someone of equal or greater talent than what is there save the ship for 2020 and have a gap to sell the next stud. I know the staff loves a qb in every class but we don't need a QB for names sake every year.

I would disagree. In the last year we've had one QB switch positions and two transfer out. We need to keep fresh blood in the pipeline every year. This is the one position that has huge turnover because as you said at most schools only one guy plays the majority of the snaps.

Don't jinx it. Iowa is one injury away from only having two QBs on the roster.

Oh, I agree, hence my point. I think its critical to sign a quality recruit at that position every year if possible. If you don't you'll end up in some years being dangerously short of depth or signing more then one in a season. There have been several years we've brought in two or three QB's in the same class,(I realize some were destined to play other positions), but everytime it seems some of these guys end up leaving once the pecking order is sorted out.

I know, I have been round and round before. I still think every now and then we should skip a year. Yes this year we are down to 3 but it would take a minor collapse to have to play the 3rd (and there is always Samson Evans). Look at it this way, let's say we pull in Duggan, you think Mansell sticks around?

If Iowa could only get one, I'd take Heinrich over Duggan. My gut is that if we don't get Heinrich it will be to a name brand school but not Nebraska. Take that corn holers.

Totally agree with you here. 3 qbs on schollie in 18 is not great depth especially when one is slated for redshirt. We want to take a quality qb every year, and we dont not want to have to take 2 in a class where if we had the depth we could use that scholarship on another position of need. Players will always leave, injuries always happen and sometimes in the extreme (see Maryland this past season), and that minor collapse can become a big one. Samson Evans cannot be considered a college qb. We would have to be at the end of our rope to use him in that capacity. Much better to have legitimate qb depth.

No, I'd agree that Mansell could leave if he's still behind Stanley, and falls behind Petras, and then we bring in another. Thats exactly my point though. This has been proven nation wide, not just at Iowa. QB's, especially 3 and 4 on the depth chart are probably 70% to transfer between year two and three. You have to keep bringing in a solid candidate every year. Its almost guaranteed that between Mansell and Petras, one of these guys will transfer by year three.

He certainly wouldn't have trouble seeing over the o-line.

At 6'7", Looking over his lineman will not be the problem. Dropping back and rolling out occasionally will probably be. Read an interesting stat on NFL QBs that are 6'6" and above ... not very good quality performers. 6'5" usually the top height for ideal NFL QB.

kceasthawk... like your reasoning. If Petras make a solid step to be Stanley's 1st backup, Mansell may bolt. I am not sold on Duggan as I see him as injury plagued career backup. 2018 may not have a lot of quality at QB but Iowa needs a good one to keep the WRs bodies that can visiting Iowa intrigued about the program. I think Brian and Kelton are sending out the right messages about the future of Iowa football. Getting visits from better quality WRs has to help build relationships. Watching practices of Iowa QBs on campus (Stanley, Mansell, and Petras) throwing to our WRs who are a definite improvement over the corps under GDGD and Booby Kennedy, should help the recruits envision where Iowa football is going (UPwards, hopefully). Iowa needs to start putting a couple of WRs in the NFL. Looking forward to improvements from Brandon Smith and ISM.

This. You don't want to have too many options if you're a coach.

Having options is good. Having a hook to be able to sell to the next class is also valuable. Like I said I understand WHY our coaches do what they do, I personally would take a little more risk regarding the qb position than our staff seems comfortable with. To each thier own.
