New Story Hawkeyes offer QB Alex Padilla

Just because a former highly ranked QB transfers, does not mean he is a take. QBs is probably the hardest to predict with regard to success in college based on HS rating. And many highly successful college QBs aren't 4 and 5 stars. No one here knows whether or not Padilla would win the QB job at Iowa in a few years if he signed at Iowa, and the same can be said for Mansell or Petras. I am guessing there were a lot of people that didn't think taking Stanley was a good idea. I would guess the majority of QBs taken in the draft were not 4 stars.

They know more than I do, but this just looks like desperation.
It’s June, and they have some great QBs on campus already. In no way does this seem desperate. Taking a QB for the sake of offering a QB would be stupid at this point.

I would bet my lunch that we see some more offers come in for Padilla in the next month.

(Thank God for copy paste and multiple windows, this just took my entire lunch)

FYI: This isn't the list of NFL draft picks from last year. Looking at the guys drafted. 4 of 11 were 4 stars or higher. And none of them were transfers as the result of getting beat by other QBs.
What year are you talking about? 17? A year before the transfer rule went into place? It hasnt been long enough for the transfers to be draft eligible.

Iowa under KF/KOK has done a solid job bringing in good QBs , if they saw his film and person at camp and offered then I would have to say in June this kid isn't a reach offer.

I'm surprised the board is so negative on this guy. He was just at camp, anytime our coaches see a guy live then immediately offer, I'm not worried about his ranking or offer list. I feel we have actually had quite a bit of success with that type of recruit. The last QB KOK recruited with a similar offer list was CJ Beathard, only 2 power 5 offers, worked out pretty good.

That is the 2018 draft. Are you talking about the draft CJ was in?

If you have a coaching change, u can transfer. If you have a bowl ban, you can transfer. If the NCAA just let's you do it, you can transfer.

That is not the 2018 draft. Here you go. 2018 draft prospects and where they were drafted.

Those transfer rules are from a couple of years ago.

If you want an even better view of what 4 star and 5 star QBs mean in HS go look at just the starting QBs in the NFL.

0 stars, and poor offer list. I just dont get it. Fwiw that probably means he will be our next Chuck Long.

I agree, I’d like to see us attempt to keep recruiting some talent with a higher ceiling before accepting this commitment 8 months before signing day. Ferentz would rather “coach em up” instead of wasting time chasing top end talent against bigger schools. It’s just the way he operates.

(face palm)

Baker #1, Darnold #3, allen 7, rosen 10, jackson 32, Rudolph 76, lauletta 108, white 171, Falk 199, lee 203, etling 219, Mcgough 220, logan Woodside 249.

You want it to be these guys because as you can see the high stars go early the rest go super late.

I'm implying we get the stud by selling the hole that would be 2019.
Dont get me wrong a stud isnt going to be afraid of the competition. I do think this new transfer rule eliminates the crash and burn scenerio everyone points to as to why a qb is needed in every class. We are going to see a few blue chips transfer out of blue blood U every year because they are in a qb room full of blue chips. Iowa has alot to be able to sell those guys if they embrace that market.
I, for one, hope we never embrace the Grad' transfer market at the QB position. I wasn't offended by our 2nd/3rd string QBs transferring to La. Tech., Mich., Texas Tech., and E. Mich. and having success for one year, but I do want our 1st string QB "groomed" in house. This sends a message to HS QBs that if you are recruited by Iowa you won't be "knocked out" by a Grad. transfer, however, you'll need to prove that you're the "best of the Hawkeye QB recruits" to land the starting role.

Dont get me wrong I am not suggesting we actively pursue that market but the reason given for never wanting to skip a class is the doomsday. If Iowa was willing to dip into that market, I incorrectly used the word embraced, they could avoid that "doomsday" in a pinch.

For the qb spot, totally agree particularly at places like Iowa who have expertise in developing the position and in their system. Mich is going to find it increasingly difficult in the future getting their targets because of habaughs tendency to grab shiny objects.

Just talk to a very good friend of 50 years and he is an Principal in the Denver area and knows this young man well.He chose not to give his opinion on the kids character but did say that he's guessing that the young man is waiting on a PAC 12 offer or a school that throws 60 times a game. The Wr's he throws to are very elite players.

So if Russell Wilson was on the market again as a grad transfer you wouldn’t want him because of the message it sends? If a player can truly help your team and/or take you over the top, you add him. Guys like Wilson and Ben Mauk are few and far between but they can change the course of a season and program. Take the best available, competition is a good thing. If a high school kid is afraid of competition then you don’t want him on your team anyways.

No, I wouldn't.
Russell Wilson was dual threat QB ~ the Hawks aren't changing their entire offensive scheme to fit his needs for one year. Besides, he's a 1000-1 shot. As for Ben Mauk, I share Rivals (3-star; 3 offers), and the NFL's opinion of his talent - Canadian league mediocrity.

I didn’t know much about him so I decided to look at his stats and watch his hudl.

182-269 (67.7) for 2678 yards and 40 TDs.

Those are legit numbers. As far as his hudl goes, I’m not an expert, but he has the tools to be successful. He can make all of the throws, including ones into coverage, and can scramble when faced with pass rush. I’m not going to call him dual-threat, but he can move when needed. His offers don’t jump off the page, but neither did Nate Stanley’s. I’m impressed with the Ivy League offers, and will take a smart qb running the offense any day of the week. If he comes here, he’ll have the benefit of a redshirt season to lift weights and learn the offense. I’d be happy if he ended up in the class.

I, too, hope Alex commits to the Hawks, but with the field narrowing down others will soon be knocking.

Without trying to sound too harsh...doesn't look like we're talking about a B1G level prospect here. Obviously an intelligent individual by some of the offers, but this might be the year to pass on a scholly qb.

The other option, of course, would be to see if maybe some better QBs might want to play at Iowa.
