I had thought this would be his way of picking his successor. But even tho he acts like he doesn’t care about the wins record, I think he sticks one more year and then pulls this move.
He does not want the AD to decide who is next HC.
He should have no say over who the next coach is. But I could certainly see that he would think that.
He's for real. The guy is a great coach. He recruited the guys while at JMU. He's done this everywhere he's coached.
I don’t think he does. Not 35 million anyway, would be under 20 million by that point, spring of 2026. Somewhere around there. And a 70+ year old that’s made a fortune certainly could walk away from that. But like I said it all really depends on the man himself, he might have signed that contract knowing very well he wouldn’t coach through 2029.
My real point was, I think he stays til he breaks the record. Health permitting. And I think he tries to force the university to hire from within the program by “stepping down” in spring so kids can’t transfer out right away and no great coach in the market at that time. Seems logical but who knows…
It's going to be KF again. I'd love for him to get the record this year and ride off into the sunset but something tells me he's here for at least another 5 years or more. The old man just won't leave. Love/Hate relationship with him but the longer it goes on, the deeper in the latter this gets for me with each passing year, well, really, each game at this point.

Anything is possible however I believe he signed the contract extension in good faith, and I would expect the University to honor their end of the deal. I say he stays through 2029.
I dunno. If you were 69 years old and had that kind of money...wouldn't you want to enjoy it while you still could?

I’d argue he’s already stayed too long. Nobody currently in the game at the P5 level has been doing it this long at one spot. The guy is a nerd with absolutely no life. He’s worth like $50M+ unless he is a fool and has taken weeklong stay-cations in his back yard. All he cares about is football. He has nothing else and might try to stay to 80 if not forced out.
Yeah, the only thing I can figure his ego (or maybe power of the position) needs fed and if he retires nobody will be sucking up to him including his wife. Unless greed is his personal God it can't be money. How much money does he require to live 10+/- years.
Most people his age would be looking forward to spending more time with grandchildren/children.
LOL - When he and University signed the contract extension, he knew what his age would be at the end of the extension, so I highly doubt age is really a factor at this point. As long as his health is good, he'll finish out the contract unless the University wants to pay him tens of millions to retire early.
Kirk has leverage to keep getting 1 year added on the back end of that deal. It will hurt recruiting to have a coach on a lame duck deal, it is standard practice that their contract expire 4 years out to ensure recruits are confident. And given how much Kirk has bent Iowas ADs over the barrel already with buyout language and the new AD just canned his boy for him, I’m not thinking he is going to play nice and remove or alter buyout language starting now. Iowa can’t afford a lame duck coach that ends up leaving empty cabinets, and just letting his contract run out will ensure just that.
Recruiting hasn't dipped, the cupboard isn't bare. If the cupboard is missing some key items it falls squarely on the shoulders of the fans who rather bitch than improve the roster by joining SWARM.
This doesn't fall on Kirks shoulders it falls on the fans.
Kirk buys quarter million dollar dead arms with bum knees. He doesn’t know how to shop for QBs. Send the man out for a Mercedes Sedan with cash to buy it and he’ll come back with a loaded up Kia and sell you on the value of it.
My question is: will Goetz sit back and let him cost the university a fortune? Instead of being a good steward. I think he will make it an ugly situation and force her hand. We have Brian as evidence of his motives.
The Nick Saban retirement is an interesting parallel . He said one of the biggest reasons he retired was NIL and his tiring of the direction that college FB was going . This would be the only way I see KF retiring. Does he at the end of the season say to himself, screw this ? Has enough money , tired of the new college landscape. I think it’s possible , but I think he’s here one more year to get the wins record . Just MO

Gary Barta made a significant mistake with the contract extension. There was no compelling reason to offer such a long-term deal. Realistically, where was Kirk going to go? Barta could have easily offered a four-year contract at $2.5 million per year, and Kirk would have accepted it. Instead, Barta locked the program into a burdensome agreement. That decision alone should have cost him his job.
Bielema is not going to be the Iowa coach. He has a non-compete in his contract that prevents him from moving to another B1G team.
I'm sure Barta had to have sign off from President & Board of Regents. He wasn't given a blank check...
