He's back

He's ALL in for PSU
Not saying you're wrong, but I have seen photos of Mr Lee rocking Iowa gear. He still may very well go the PSU route, but he also may very well not have his mind made up yet. Happy to see that both Justin Mejia and Spencer Lee are healed up and back on the mat. 120lbs just got a whole lot deeper!

He was at the last 2 PSU home matches and seems to be enjoying himself among his future team members.
I would not make any statements about where he is going until he arrives there. You are quickly losing any credibility, He has been pretty hush hush about his plans, and it seems the best thing to do is respect that and not put words in his mouth.

Does that mean every Iowa kid who has ever enjoyed themselves at a meet in CHA will be a hawk? I'm sure Spencer wants to be a champion and he'll realize who has the best track record of winning titles at the light weights. Especially after Gilman wins the next two.

Am I the only one that think he may be too small for a 125 pounder in college?

He is right now. At least a NC 125 pounder - which is what we are all expecting. But he's still got two years to go, so I think he will be just fine.

It would be rather shocking if a 16 year old couldn't gain 5 pounds in the next 6-7 years.
I would think he needs to be walking around at about 140 preseason to be a legitimate 125 NC contender. Does it seems like he is anywhere near that? I do not know. I have never seen him in person, but I know the average 110 pounder on the junior world team usually ends up being too small for 125 in college.
Just sayin

I thought he said in an interview that his days at 110 are done. The only reason he went back to 110 this year was to wrestle for a World title. It's a good sign for his college 125 prospects if he thinks 110 is too much of a cut, and this would have come prior to January.

I cringe every time there is a Spencer Lee thread. It brings out the idiots of two fan bases, and quickly spirals out of control. Part of me hopes he goes someplace nobody expected, and all the morons get to crawl back into their holes.
Maybe enthusiasts would be a better term than morons. If not Iowa I hope he doesn't go to PSU good grief they have enough blue chip wrestlers.

This thread actually hasn't been too bad, but those are my feelings on the subject

Thanks. That bodes better for his college days. It seems to me that Gilman was a 121 pounder on the world team and coming out of high school he tried to make the team at 121. He seems to be finally reaching a good size for a 125 NC. I appreciate the information.

Iowa has been the best program in the country at 125 and 133. It's not close.
Iowa Champions and All-Americans at 125 &133 under Brands (the < or > means under or over achieved, = about right):
Gilman (HS Rank: #16) > (4th); Clark (HS Rank: #23) > (2d, 5th); Ramos > (HS Rank: #10) (1st, 2d, 3d); McDonough >> (HS Rank: #14) (1st, 2d, 1st); Dennis >>> (2d, 7th) (HS: not ranked); Falck (HS Rank: ? very high) < (6th, 8th); Slaton >> (HS Rank #24) (2d)

PSU All-Americans at 125 & 133 under Cael:
Megaludis </= (HS Rank: #3) (3d, 2d, 2d); Conoway > (HS Rank: 3 108 - right next to #107 Brody Grothus)) (8th); Gulibon < (HS Rank: #3) (5th); Long* (3d) (I'm not counting Long - he was a ringer)
From this group Ramos and Dennis are top favorites to make the olympic team.

I also compared OSU and tOSU and they aren't close to Iowa.

I want him to be a Hawkeye very much, but I fear it's gong to be very difficult to get him out of his home state. I hope he goes to Iowa City, I want to be able to root for this kid every match!

Isn't he was slowly starting to move his family to Iowa? :)

Spencer Lee is anything but average. He wasn't just on the World Team but he won the World Championship tech falling his opponent in the final in about a minute or so. He lost to the 3rd place World Finisher at 121? (Fix) in two crazy matches and had to drop to make the World Team.
He's only a Junior and has plenty of time to put on some good size. Just looking at California state results, there are plenty of guys who were tiny in High School and went on to compete for and win national titles in college. 1992 Eric Guerrero 3rd at 112 lbs. Multiple time national champ
1993 Stephen Abas 4th at 103 lbs 1994 Champ at 112. 95 Champ at 119. 1996 Champ 119lbs. Multiple Time national champ. Olympic Silver Medalist.
2006 Boris Novachekov Champ 103. NCAA AA. I believe semi-finalist.
2007 Jesse Delgado 3rd 103. 2008 3rd 112. 2009 Champ 112. Multiple Time National Champ.
2010 Nashon Garrett Champ at 103. 2011 Champ at 112. Mutliple AA, National Finalist. Currently ranked #1 at 133.
Bottom line is kids grow. Spencer Lee will compete for multiple national championships and hopefully he does so with Iowa.

I think T.J Hill was a junior world champ and just wasn't big enough to succeed at the D1 level. He simple didn't grow like the others you mentioned.

Tj was very small but he did AA in d1 lost in a very close semi to garland I believe he ended up finishing 4th a shame they pulled his weight class on the international level as he really isn't big enough at all to compete with these guys at 57 wasn't big enough for 55 either

Yes. T.J. was ready to kick Mark Munoz's ass down in St. Louis. The crowd near the scene went nuts when he went after Munoz. [the short story - Munoz was being a dick]

While we can certainly agree that some small guys stay that small, but I think it's relatively short sighted to assume that because a guy cut down to 110 lbs prior to the start of his Junior year that he would be too small to wrestle a high level at 125 lbs 3 years later.

So you're saying that you don't care where he and the fiancé are registered? I'm thinking a May cer...oops, sorry 1stplace

They probably have several. They do funny scholarship math there. Or maybe there are special scholarships for the wrestlers in addition to the usual.

Hah!!! I'm still waiting for the proof from some of you blowhards.

Let's start another rumor "Tom Brands killed 5 hookers". Now go with it.

We had a great recruit in Brad Petaky about 8 years ago who would have done much better had he grow a bit more. Seemed smaller than his opponent almost every match. Word was he would be a national champ at 118!

That said, I would take a somewhat undersized Spenser Lee and take my chances;)

For the good of the sport, I pray Spenser stays healthy for the duration of his career where ever he lands. But of course I'm hoping PSU.
