The girls varsity volleyball coach at Richards High School in Oak Lawn has been suspended without pay and charged with a felony after he allegedly used his cellphone to covertly record images in the girls' locker room at the school.
Oak Lawn police said that 31-year-old Raymond W. Van Syckle, of Joliet, had bail set Tuesday at $75,000 during an appearance at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview. Police said that they investigated after a female student at the school reported noticing an unattended cellphone in the locker room which she believed was recording her.
Police, in a news release Wednesday, said that a warrant was obtained for Van Syckle's phone and evidence recovered showed the student had been photographed.
Ty Harting, the Community High School District 218 superintendent, said that Van Syckle was put on suspension Monday and that the district "will explore all legal options regarding his employment." Van Syckle was also the pool and equipment manager at the school, the superintendent said in an email.
Conditions set at Van Syckle's bond hearing bar him from having access to any district property and from having contact with the girl or her family, Harting said.
Police said that Van Syckle was taken into custody Sunday, with the Cook County state's attorney's office approving the charge of unauthorized video recording on Tuesday.
Police and school administrators are asking that any other students who might have information related to the investigation contact administrators at Richards.
