Fran McCaffery and his staff had high hopes heading into the weekend that they could make a strong case to newly minted four star 2020 forward Max Murrell.

The Omaha native had visited Iowa last fall before he blew up this spring after a series of strong performance at various events. His stock continued to rise and after visits to Stanford and TCU, Murrell made his way back to Iowa City.

Then he returned to Omaha after a home visit with the Stanford coaches on Monday, the talented forward with high academic credentials opted to commit to the Cardinal.

Iowa’s search for a couple of prospects to join point guard Ahron Ulis in the Class of 2020 continues.

The good news is there are still plenty of very good players out there with mutual interest in the Iowa program.

The next wave of visitors will be on campus the weekend of September 27th, when Iowa will host four star forward Jamari Sibley and three star big man Steven Crowl. Then in October, four star in-state standout Xavier Foster will wrap up his official visit tour with another trip to Iowa City.

McCaffery and his staff are also trying to line up official visits from three star forward D.J. Gordon and four star shooting guard Kerwin Walton.

Sibley, a 6-foot-8 forward from Milwaukee, is attending Oak Hill Academy for his senior year. He has official visits set up to Minnesota this weekend, Iowa on the 27th, and Georgetown on October 4th.

Crowl, who stands 6-foot-10 and is from Minnesota, visited Wisconsin last weekend and had taken an official visit to Minnesota in late August. He will see Colorado this weekend and then Iowa on the 27th. He is expected to make a decision following those visits.

Foster is still in the midst of his series of official visits. He has already made his official visit to Iowa State. He will makes trips to Virginia Tech and Providence the next two weekends and then be on the Iowa campus October 10th for what is expected to be his final official visit.

Iowa continues to work on garnering an official visit from Walton. Right now his only scheduled trip is to Arizona for the weekend of September 27th and many believe the Wildcats could be in the driver’s seat to land him.

Gordon is a newer name to Iowa fans. He released his top six last week and included the Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-6 three star from Pittsburgh will visit Penn State this weekend and Minnesota next weekend. Then he has a pair of October trips lined up to VCU and Providence. Gordon says he is still discussing a date for a possible trip to Iowa City.

With Ulis on board, the Hawkeyes have room for two more prospects in the Class of 2020. Ideally they would like to lock up commitments from two more players in this class that will sign in November. Foster would certainly be at the top of the list given that he is an in-state standout and the Hawkeyes need to add size in 2020.

After that, McCaffery could look to land the best prospect available. A case could be made that Iowa needs another player with size if you take the longer term view of recruiting. But, a wing shooter is always a welcome addition in today’s game.
