How did Iowa Western become what it is?

It is not just football. The men and women have 7 NJCAA National Championships between them. Football (2012), baseball (2010, 2012, 2014), and soccer (2013). The women's National Championships were in volleyball (2006) and soccer (2013). Plus, the cheer-leading squad won the 2016 World University Championships.[

I think there is also a mixture of an administration that will look the other way when taking exceptionally gifted athletes with issues and a group of kids who are there for the right reasons...under recruited...late developer..kids getting a second chance.....developing focus in the classroom...and so on.
Watch Last Chance U if you want to see an ugly side of juco football.

It helps when you have a President that is committed to winning. The AD that is there now just came on board in the last yr., so you can't give him all the credit. I wouldn't be surprised to see them be a 4 yr. college at some point.

I didn't get that feel in my interactions there. There is some of that at all programs

It's a juco very close to a relatively large city with easy airport access for recruiters, very good coaching, and great facilities on a nice campus that feels like a small 4-year college.

You could have just said “because it is in council bluffs.”

Multiple things at play here. Dr Dan Kinney is the president and is very committed to not only winning on the field/court but to having all facets of the college be top notch.
AD Jeremy Capo is going into his 3rd year this fall. Very good guy. Brenda Hampton was the AD for the previous 14 yrs and was the volleyball coach before that. She did a tremendous job. Both football and wrestling started under her watch.
Stroh is a hell of a coach. Great guy. The kids like him and respect him. Has great connections around the country.
Pretty well all the sports get really good kids. They don't take a bunch of kids with issues. Sure not everyone is a perfect saint, but you won't see kids like EMCC has on their FB team or Indian Hills has on their BB team, for example.

Since they are a public JC, what would be the steps to going 4 year? Not sure it's an option.

I've noticed that out of the upper Midwest Kansas and Iowa are represented, Kansas had three top tier juco schools.

There is no possible way they could be national championship competitors. They are from a low population state that has multiple in state universities. They do not have mountains or oceans and the hottest of women from there are west coast 7's. They do not have the built in advantages or the long tenure of the big boys. This is obviously fake news.................. wait a minute........... why can't the U of I compete on a national championship level again?

I agree that much of it has to do with having Tom Osborne help with setting up the program. I remember when they decided to add football and it was reported he was consulting with them. Regardless of how I feel about Nebraska football that kind of experience has to be invaluable.

The first most logical answer is $$$. IWCC has invested into being successful. Osborne was about connections, name recognition and such. Wonder how many Jucos can make this claim with a former coach with D1 titles? They've been successful in nearly all their sports though, Tom was merely an ingredient to the football success. No money, no honey!

It sitting on the Iowa side, on the east edge of CB is an ideal location. The Omaha/Council Bluffs metro is nearly a million people. A top 60(59) metro and next to a top 45(42) city isn't Hicksville. 10 minutes one direction, you're in a rather large metropolis drinking a Moscow mule in the Old Market, 10 mins the other, Busch Lite and cow tipping! Best of both worlds!

Hmmm... they are similar, playing in the big ten type of conference and being in a metro area of almost a million with admission standards that are fairly stringent.... so almost exactly the same.

Weren't the Hawks one play away from the inaugural playoff and outright B1G title recently?

Ahhh. Very good. Bloodredd is of the belief there is no reason that Iowa cannot be a national title contending program. I agree sir. I think if we are being honest 1 play from the playoff was still a mile from winning the natty, like iwcc has been able to do, but I agree with the optimism.

Has anyone noticed how when a program is able to grab themselves by the bootstraps and pull themselves up we as hawk fans, MYSELF INCLUDED, immediately go to "they must be doing something shaddy" or "they bring in less than desireables"?

Maybe they just have a better system?

So Iowa Western is ready to take on Alabama? You know because winning a national championship is the same at all levels and divisions. I think UNI has a flag football team that goes to the national playoffs regularly, maybe Iowa can see how they do it.

2 types of people in this world, the type of people who get $hit done and the type of people who dont... I know nothing of this AD but what he has done in a handful of years to get kids to CB and build a program is impressive. Sounds like the kind of guy who gets stuff done and the type I wish was running the ad at Iowa.

Lol. This has been discussed. Based on the bowl outcome alone, it was extremely obvious to the world that it was one of the more overrated teams in modern history. They were successful due to the schedule that year

How would iowa do against Bama? Take your time...

I'm guessing that you would have said that we had no chance against Ohio State last year too........and probably Michigan the year before...and probably Penn State last year too.
So, who is it that Iowa can't compete with on a national level?
Just Alabama?

In nearly every year? All of them. There is a reason why Ferentz hides behind his preseason schedule each year. And don’t give me the brainwashed reasoning they have told the media to spread all these years. In terms of the occasional upset in conference. Most underdogs play better against conference foes due to familiarity, style of play, etc. you simply can’t judge a season based on one conference game. Again, in terms of national presence and respect as being a national threat? We are a zero burger

I re-read the AD's bio. Liked his 83% increase in fundraising at his previous stop. Missed the commenting on his previous programs success on the field. Will be interesting to watch
