How do you rank winning the west?

Fry won 3 conference titles (1 outright-2 shared)
Ferentz has 2 conference titles (shared), and a West Division Championship

The conference championship game is essentially a wildcard playoff game to reach the playoffs. With so little crossover and unbalanced crossover at that, is it fair to weight an appearance in the CCG as a shared title? Or do you have to win the thing to get any glory?

I would say a division championship is banner worthy and argue that Fry and Ferentz each picked 3 apples. Fry just many have one apple that is larger.

I would argue that winning the West, especially last year counts as a conference championship for Kirk. In the Fry era, had Iowa gone undefeated in regular season play like Iowa did last season and Michigan St. had one loss like they did, Iowa would have been the sole winner even though the two teams did not play in the regular season.

I am a big fan of the conference championship game and wouldn't change that at all. But when comparing Fry and Ferentz then you have to consider last season as a Conference Champion year for the Hawks.

I agree with ams. If you're trying to compare, it is easy to determine what the result would have been for the contemporary teams by looking at other B1G records. 2015 would have been an outright B1G Championship if it was achieved during Fry's tenure.

If the Hawks beat MSU would we still be having this discussion ? While winning your Division is nice, it's only good for one thing. It allow's you to play for the Conference Championship, period.

In my opinion, the Division Title is just an additional rung in the ladder to the top. Previously the ladder had 2 rungs...Conference Title, Rose Bowl. Now it has 3...Division, Conference, Bowl (Playoff). Winning the division is a nice, and necessary, accomplishment to get to the top...but I don't put it on the same level as winning the conference prior to its expansion.

This. We almost won the BIG10 title last year... but did not.

Agree witu IOU1 that the division title is a separate accomplishment. A division title is nice, but a step below a conference title.
