How does HBOT think a 200% tariff on John Deere play in farm country?

Any solution involves encouraging companies like Deere to retain their domestic manufacturing capacity...

The first solution should be something that doesn't hurt us more than it hurts them.

Remember you can't just enact a John Deere tax, you can only in general tax farm equipment manufactured outside the US. So is there a domestic competitor to John Deere that is large enough to make up for Deere's reduced sales in the US.

The third thing is if Thunderlips71 is to be believed which it sounds right because we do have a free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico and most free trade agreements are specifically an agreement not to implement tariffs. And it should be noted that the Trump administration itself negotiated the current free trade agreement.

So an American icon company is going to layoff thousands of American workers to take advantage of cheaper Mexican labor….and the democrats on here are like “what evs “.
Trump is claiming that this tariff will help farmers. If he would have said it was to protect American workers then he might have a case, but placing an extremely high tariff on parts and equipment farmers rely on will not help farmers. JD will pass their increase in cost on to the consumer, the American farmer.

Excellent points.

Trump is just spouting what he thinks will get him applause and votes.
If he's elected, there won't be a single promise activated.
It will be four years of revenge against anyone he feels wronged him.

United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)

Good luck beating Mexico’s labor costs and likely regulation and working condition costs.

Robots might eventually build the stuff cheaper domestically but that won’t employ a lot of people anyway.

Many of them are so blinded by stupid cultural issues they will literally vote against their financial interests.

Hence why I laugh.
But, they were hauling a load of grain out of Storm Lake and they saw a brown person, and every day they send their kids off to school praying they don't come back forced to be trans. They don't have a choice.

So, it's almost like you are saying Trump just pulled something out of his ass as he free formed a speech because he doesn't understand complex issues, and doesn't really have the concept of plans and policies?

Union card holding man Chuck Grassley would totally take a stand on this, right? What about Breadbags and News Barbie, whose district would take a gut punch? MMM's district and the district she actually lives in would take a punch, too.

Nothing is 100% made anywhere anymore,.. Straw man question.
So, which brands will US farmers buy? Do you think a 200 punitive tariff on one company will be enforced? Certainly a tariff of that nature would have to apply to all farm implement manufacturers.

Most of the farmers here are Trumpist.

I will laugh if they all can no longer afford the machines they need for their business because of their decision to join a cult.
No, no, no. You don’t understand tariffs. Mexico will pay for these. It’s just billions of dollars for the US government! Consumer and farmers aren’t hurt at all.

The American farmer won't pay 200% more for the Deere label,.. Deere will lose domestic market.
Which is why everyone should be terrified that the US President wants to pick winners and losers, even if it means kneecapping a Fortune 100 global company that helped build this country like Deere.

Put it in the giant pile of evidence indicating he is unfit for office.

So tell me how a farmer purchases non-Deere parts for their Deere equipment?

Your ignorance covers many topics.

You can already purchase numerous non-OEM parts for current Deere models...

Grow up, stop being so insulting, and perhaps I'll continue to converse with you,.. If not there are numerous others here who are far less demanding in conversational maintenance than yourself.

If you use non-OEM parts what does that do to the warranty?

And where are those made? SMFH

Conversational maintenance? LOL - you can't maintain a conversation past a simple question or two. You're very feeble.

To be fair to Rifler, he's pretty old. He thinks farmers park their tractor under a shade tree and slap new parts in that they bought at the local hardware store.

Case IH has had enough, moving to Mexico

A year after workers won wage increases through a lengthy strike, the corporate owners of a 180-year-old farm equipment manufacturer in Racine County are laying off staff and shifting work to Mexico.

Caterpillar looking at Mexico location

Cat has dispatched experts to Mexico to test the waters there for possible relocation of the Sanford NC Skid Steer Loader and CTL. Coincidentally, Deere is moving the same product lines from Dubuque, Iowa to Mexico as well.

Kubota

September 15, 2024, Kubota will be implementing a workforce reduction measure that will affect all second shift employees in Building 2 of the Jefferson, Georgia site. This decision marks a significant departure from the company's historical precedent, as Kubota has not conducted any layoffs in over a decade.

It's all about the bottom line for companies.

We CANNOT compete with the cheap labor down in Mexico.

We have to find creative ways to offset the higher cost of US labor.

The easiest way is to lower taxes either by lowering the corp bracket or with credits. Dems shoot that down instantly.

I'm not a Trump fan but don't be stupid.

100% has to do with covid.

This article was written before Covid in Oct. 2019.

The U.S. manufacturing sector is not in a good place.

The latest poor results came from the government’s jobs report on Friday. The Labor Department reported that manufacturers lost 2,000 jobs in September, well below the 18,000 positions it added this time last year and even below the 2,000 gain it saw in August.

No matter who the president is you’re always going to be a loser. Who never did anything productive for the country.

They will need to rename the Case IH Green White and Red zone.

At some point the only remaining offset to be made to the current high cost of US labor, will be a reduced standard of living for US labor job holders,.. Combine losses in manufacturing with an open border and you have the makings of an economic disaster.
