I do just write a check to Heifer.
But beyond that I was very fortunate in my business career that I could semi-retire early. So now I focus my time on projects that are making a difference.
- I provide pro bono operations and organization scaling advice to a very successful after school program in inner city Chicago that serves youth (both legal and illegal residents).
- I provide pro bono consulting support (board governance, executive coaching, revenue growth etc) to an economic development organization in inner city Chicago
- I am building the strategic plan for a third organization that provides assistance to all kinds of people also focused on the inner city.

Gotta admit I liked “autistic screeching”. It has a good mouth feel. I’m going to steal that one for future use, even if it doesn’t apply to me directly.

My ex and her whole family immigrated from Canada. They all spoke fluent French, but assimilated into society and learned the language. My ex came over in the third grade and went from a French third grade to repeating third grade in English. They eventually all got their citizenship. And they think the illegals coming in this country is an outrage

And how do you feel about the illegals who did none of that?

I’m very much in favor of a legal process, it’s been a failure of every administration. And there’s plenty of lawlessness to go around.

I'm not a fan of the thread and OP in the context. The illegals coming here are seeking their own way to achieve Thanksgiving. They are risking a lot to do so, even knowing it's illegal. I don't think they should be here, and I would like them to leave, but I'd invite them to my Thanksgiving meal. I'd also let them know they are welcome to come back next Thanksgiving and every Thanksgiving after that, but only as a legal resident.
In the bigger, everyday context, most liberals want to help people, which is noble. The problem is, they don't want to help personally, they want everyone to be forced to help. Once that happens, there are people who are content to be helped rather than be responsible for themselves.

And by the way, this thread is about how D's handle a D created problem (illegal immigrants).
Then you think it's a gotcha when you ask how R's would handle yet another D created problem (abortion).
Not a D (but am a never-Trumper), but there are a lot of groups I care about that I’m not inviting over for Thanksgiving. Not sure this is the gotcha that you think it is.

If they’ve truly entered illegally and are not/have never been involved in a process to legalize themselves? This is where I would like an amnesty program of some sort - in broad strokes I’ve suggested the following before:
1) they get 1 year to come forward and identify themselves. If they can establish that they have a job, have a place to live etc; AND have never committed anything worse than a parking ticket; I’d grant them essentially a permanent resident status or something. BUT they can never apply for citizenship.
2) if they do not, or do commit a crime after coming forward, they get deported with no appeals.
3) anyone who has committed a crime is fair game for deportation.

Not too bad. There are probably some nuances that need t be addressed, but it would be a good framework. Most wester countries require a resident alien be able to support themselves, so they would have to keep a job, have health insurance, etc.
