How Many Syrian Refugees Should the US Take In?

[from an email]

War and famine have displaced more than 11 million Syrians. Germany—whose population is one-fourth ours—is accepting 800,000 refugees this year, yet the United States has only committed to accepting up to 8,000 Syrian refugees next year.

Is 8,000 enough? What do you think "our share" should be?

I saw one recommendation for 65,000. Does that sound reasonable?

We accepted a bunch after the Vietnam War and we accepted a bunch after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Both groups have assimilated nicely and are contributing members of society.

We are obligated in this case to take a bunch and I would suggest a number 2-3 times larger than 65,000. We should get out in front of this issue before others start making recommendations on just what our responsibility should be.

Angela Merkel seems to be the world leader who is acting most honorably in this instance. I have been a little stunned that Obama is ignoring this issue.

He should by now, have structured a game plan for all of North America ... Us, Canada, Mexico, and even Cuba.

My only caveat would be that English lessons should be intense and provided for all.

None.

If you want them, you can have them. Maybe they can turn your neighborhood into what it's like in Sweeden now, the rape capital of the world. Germany is already telling it's female students to cover their arms and legs because they might induce the refugees to rape them.
