How to win in recruiting

Fascinating. I'm surprised that Notre Dame isn't ranked higher, and I'm shocked that WVU is ranked so high (28). Living very close to Mountaineer country, I just don't get the national appeal, other than their reputation as a party school. I mean, really, Morgantown? Also surprised by how high Louisville is ranked. Maybe a reflection of Lamar Jackson's Heisman success?

How should our recruiting pitch change based on this information?

What brand do we have?

The phrase, “ Not Sexy” probably doesn’t ring the bell for these kids. Seems like everyone says “family” and everyone says “great education.”

Maybe based on how many kids make the NFL we can say: “We will make you a star if you have what it takes.” Making sure the recruits see that wall of all-Americans.

Maybe we go with: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog!” Animal rights activists and recruits moms might hate that one. (Ok, the dads might like it, but mamma seems to have a lot more influence).

I don’t t know. Ideas?

When the Zooker was at Illinois, wasn't there recruiting pretty decent? Not a good coach but a good recruiter to a Non name brand school. Yes I believe brand name is relevant, but good recruiters can recruit well to any school. Illinois proved that.

When you read a piece like this, you need to be more critical about how the original data was gathered. There is absolutely no chance that the folks who did the piece even did anything remotely close to a representative random sample. Regional biases are factors that would/could greatly impact the notion of brand.

Furthermore, brand, as they're defining it, is certainly a dynamic quantity that IS certainly highly dependent upon perception. It's also dependent upon the individual - given what the individual values. Thus, this is another factor that undermines what might be their attempts to sample the high school players.

Of course, my criticisms aside - that's not to say that there aren't nuggets of value within the article. However, it's more of a challenge to pluck them out amidst all the erroneous conclusions (and/or unsupported conclusions).
