All sub-state games will now be played at the home site of the higher-seeded team. Neutral courts are done.

Huge change from the state association. Regular season games are now much more important. One potential negative side effect could be schools watering down their schedules to keep a glossy W/L record. BCMoore rankings factor in things like strength of schedule and often has more accurate rankings. However, margin of victory also factors in, so somebody running up the score plays into it.

It will be interesting to see how schools adjust. I'm guessing there will be some contracts ended soon, which is too bad.

What happens is schools will selectively eliminate games they think aren't guaranteed wins.

Basketball: In an adoption from an NFHS rule for states using shot clocks, the closely guarded “five seconds” rule will be eliminated starting in 2024-25.

Following previous board discussion and basketball advisory committee recommendation, substate final games in Class 4A and Class 3A will be hosted by the higher-seeded team.

about freaking time. NW Iowa native and spring golf back in the mid 80's was terrible... late snow cover and hardly having a season before sectionals would start.
Terrible for small schools. Boys' golf is gonna have about 2 kids out in the fall after this change.

As a track coach it's great, but there's no need for this outside of 4A and maybe 3A.

Dumb move. It will be hard getting on the course for the first month. Small town golf courses struggle as is. They can’t shut down men’s day or league or Saturday tournaments for high school. 9 hole course don’t have the same capabilities as 18.
The kid from Grundy center, who set a state record winning the individual title a few years ago and several on their team this past season would likely have played for the football team over golf.
You can play golf and track. Not golf and football.
This was a move by the union to make their jobs easier. Not make it easier for kids and businesses.
The state sent out a survey about this yet.
Chose to say “several schools wanted this “ rather than show the data. That’s a quite from someone lying about the data.
Ps. It snowed at state golf last year in fall I believe.

F the state association.

They were also busy on Monday sticking it to small school golf programs.

Small town golf courses struggle because they are ran and occupied by small town and small brained people.

Either the small school golf teams will struggle or their football teams will struggle. You'd be amazed how many kids will chose golf simply because it is easier. And, as pointed out above, you really can't do both. If I were a football coach I would tell them to choose because you can't miss several days of football practice a week.

This move was step #1 in getting baseball and softball into the spring sports season. Moving boys golf and girls tennis to the fall means they’ll now be able to “add” another sport into that window.

The state has effectively ended a kids ability to play four different sports throughout the year.

Football, golf, and XC will suffer in the fall. I suppose golf and XC together are doable, but football requires a full team to be there and practicing every day.

The spring would then have track competing against baseball (and soccer/tennis in schools that have that) in the spring. No way a kid can do both baseball and soccer at same time, but I suppose he might still be able to run if he’s really naturally gifted.

This all comes down to the state trying to get away from summer sports. There are numerous reasons they want to do this, but NONE of them involve having a better system for kids.

GOLF CHANGE:
FWIW, I heard the Grundy kid is going to do both golf and football. Not sure how that's going to work out, but if you are a coach of either sport and the kid is that good, you find a way to make it work. I would guess Fridays are locked in to football only. Can you imagine playing a Saturday golf tourney still sore from last night's game?? It was hard enough to get out of bed some Saturday mornings, let alone playing 18 holes.

I would think the Grundy kid is the exception, and not the norm, though.

Weak sauce that the full results were not shared. But not surprising. What will be really interesting is if one union moves baseball/softball to the spring and the other doesn't want to. One of my biggest memories about baseball was detassling all day in the sun and coming back to play games later that day.

BASKETBALL CHANGE:
Regarding the 5 second rule change, I guess I can stop yelling, "Where's the count?!" now. I think it will help officials and allow them to do a better job seeing the game. I'm all for that. We are losing officials in crazy numbers. If we can make life easier for them, and take some heat off them, I'm all for it.

It sucks if you have a great defender, though. Makes it tougher to get the ball out of a great player's hands. Before you could force them to give it up to avoid the 5 and then face guard to keep him from getting it back. I guess you can run a trap at them, but leaving somebody open is a risk. It will be a little harder to force weaker players to beat you as playmakers have nothing to worry about with the ball now.

Wow, most small schools can’t accommodate the number of fans attending sub-state finals. Talk about nonsense.

Why should bigger schools have to deal with the riff-raff that comes along with hosting small town schools?

The coin flips two ways

Bummer. It was nice to see our gym full when two teams from other communities actually cared to show up.

Blame the politicians...it's intended to get smaller schools to combine programs and eventually school mergers are the next logical step.
I'm totally serious.

Mediapolis loves hosting local 1A district games and other 2A games. It’s generally full, fans of both teams then Mepo fans. There’s usually 3 student sections as well or our students join one of the others. It gets loud. I’m guessing you haven’t been to some of the smaller 1A gyms or even some 2A gyms. Some of them are very small with very limited seating.

Boys and Girls?
Doubtful...separated entities.

I believe girl's sports have been doing this already for a very long time.

After reading the entire thing on the IHSAA website, sounds like the basketball game at the higher seeded team's gym is only for 3A and 4A?
So still could be neutral site, potentially, for 1A and 2A.

This is similar to how MN does their high school sports seasons. Lots of MN kids then play in summer baseball, softball, and hoops leagues.
