It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!

I’m pretty much done posting here but since nobody else has chimed in and fans are understandably curious, I’ll share what we saw while we were in the room.

Spencer and Dennis were working together and wrestling at a pretty decent pace. Spencer was moving well and looking good. All of the guys were getting after it. Jaydin was doing some especially intense conditioning work — and this was actually his second work-out of the day. All of our guys looked in great shape. Noticed that Max, in particular, was especially ripped.

Several guys were lifting most of the time we were there, including Kem. Tony and Nelson had to work the football game for school but the rest of the starters were there. Fans therefore didn’t get to see “Hercules Cassioppi” in the flesh this time. Abe looked healthy and strong. Don’t have any more specific details about match-ups as there were lots of distractions and conversations going on.

As for others in attendance, Jeremiah Moody was there and in his usual good spirits, just mingling and cracking jokes. Cash Wilcke, Paul Glynn, and Sam Stoll were there and having a good time. Larry Lee was mingling and all smiles. Absolutely awesome dude and a tremendous resource for the program and other parents. There were some significant donors in attendance as well — lots of momentum on that front these days.

Our coaching staff is phenomenal, needless to say. All smiles and taking time to greet almost everyone and make everyone feel welcome. Just incredibly high-quality people. Hawk fans are proud of them, of course, but it’s worth emphasizing how amazing those guys are. Great leaders, mentors, husbands, fathers, and friends. Loyal, caring, and exceedingly ethical. I heard an interesting quote: “There’s decency and honesty, and then there’s recruiting. At many schools, those are very different things. At Iowa, they’re one and the same.” We can be very proud of the integrity of our coaching staff. It’s unfortunate that some other staffs lack that integrity and are perfectly willing to lie to recruits and their parents to gain a commitment. Recruits and their parents should keep this in mind and always seek to verify as much as possible. They should also be wary of coaches who stoop to criticizing other programs to make their own look better.

Overall a good crowd especially considering the short notice. The bleachers were basically full, with recruits and others. There were a good number of other folks standing. There was apparently one woman in a PSU shirt but otherwise no clearly identifiable PSU fans.

Overall a very upbeat practice with lots of laughs and smiles among the coaches, fans, alumni, and parents. And the Hawks looked hungry and ready to rock and roll!

You had a nice post going until the holier than thou nonsense. what the coaches just want you to criticize the other programs for them?

WDM
I appreciate the insight, for fans that live out of state and are diehard Hawk fans like myself these tidbits really help understand how the preseason is shaping up.

I came to learn about wrestling practice. Because I care about the wrestling. @WWDMHawkeye wet dream derailed the conversation.
You came here, on a Hawkeye message board with die-hard fans, looking to "learn" about a wrestling practice and are upset that said die-hard fan is being biased towards his coaching staff? Were you expecting some journalistic type report where it would only contain objective comments and facts throughout? Because that seems like a you problem, especially if you found it "derailed the conversation".

You should probably just wait till Willie's show Monday and hope he, a journalist, reports on the practice objectively rather than scouring some fan forums for that.

What time does your Sunday service start where you pray to lord Brands? Maybe it’d help if I come to that.
When the man at the helm is integrity driven and intentional about it, as a man who values character myself I am drawn towards that. What type of people are you drawn too? Ones that won't be brutally honest when you need it or ones that don't challenge you? You do realize all the conclusions WWDM drew comparing Iowa to other programs isn't speculation, right?

Did you wake up one the wrong side of the bed? What did you expect on a Hawkeye message board? Honestly
It’s not unexpected, it’s just some posters take it to the next level. Look, I get Iowa has great coaches, and Iowa fans should be happy about that. But the constant infatuation with the coaches off the mat near godlike status borders cult following for some people.

Any examples of the things they lie to recruits about? Scholarship money? Potential to start? Don’t need names, just truly interested in the recruiting process. I have no idea, it seems like it would be straight forward, you get x dollars or not, you win the starting spot or not.

This thread is a good example of one of the reasons why I've basically quit posting on this board. I'm done wasting time in pissing matches with insecure, Iowa-hating, Iowa-obsessed fools taking pot shots.

The above summary of yesterday's practice was for Iowa fans -- nobody else. Really don't give a crap what anyone else thinks or what kind of garbage they want to post, and I won't dignify any of that nonsense with a reply. Any non-Iowa fans taking cheap shots in this thread would be well-served by some self-examination. Maybe do some thinking about why they're obsessing with what Iowa fans have to say about an Iowa wrestling practice on a Sunday morning two months before wrestling season. Surely there must be more constructive things to be doing with their time and energy than dwelling on what happened in the Iowa room and anonymously hurling insults at someone they don't know from Adam. That's some messed up stuff right there.

To clarify about our coaches, for my fellow Iowa fans (and you internet tough guys can stick this in your ear for all I care): I fully understand that our coaches are just as imperfect as the rest of us. We all have our quirks and flaws. They'd be the first to admit that. But they do stand out in their sincerity and their commitment to being honest and only positive with recruits and their families. I recognize that our staff isn't the only one comprised of good guys. The sport is full of quality people, and I don't mean to imply that this isn't the case. That said, recruiting is a nasty, dirty business in which coaches flat-out lie to recruits and their families, and it pisses me off. I've heard story after story of this crap happening, and I'm sick of it. For the keyboard warriors, that crap doesn't come out of thin air -- it comes from other coaches.

Sadly, virtually every coaching staff that recruits against us uses negative recruiting tactics. Our coaches don't. That sets them apart, and I think that needs to be understood and appreciated by our fans. This isn't my opinion. Ask the parents of any top recruit looking at Iowa, and I can almost guarantee that other staffs have at least used negative tactics against us and that our staff has stayed above that. Based on frustration with this dynamic in recruiting, I included that positive plug for our coaches, because I thought it needed to be said.

I don't worship our coaches. I do admire them, and that admiration has been earned by their conduct and their dedication to doing things the right way. Of course I'm a biased fan and I'll always go to bat for my Hawks. Shoot -- I've been a fan for almost half a century and Iowa wrestling is a passion my dad and I have shared all of my life. Like many of you, it's a way of life for our family. Of course it means a lot to me. Of course there will be some emotion in that. Of course I'll praise our guys when they earn it. If some idiot behind a keyboard wants to call me creepy, cult-like, etc., that's his/her problem. And I do think he/she does have issues, which is sad.

Had to get that off my chest for my fellow Iowa fans. Good luck putting up with the idiots. I'm out.

I’ve heard the idea of negative recruiting tactics being used against Iowa for years, and it really came into focus courtesy of Mr. Lee’s binder. But, whenever someone presses for details everyone clams up like they’re protecting the holy ****ing grail. The coaches should say what they’re dealing with, fight it out in the open. No need to name coaches or other programs, but I think an airing of subtle hints would make other teams look petty as shit.

When you compare how we recruit to how others recruit, having a somewhat open discussion would make us stand out even more. Maybe we’re missing recruits because they buy the false narrative.

I’ve never understood why we allow other programs to lie and then act coy about it instead of calling them out on their bs.
