HWC RTC practice at 11AM Saturday

I’ve heard the idea of negative recruiting tactics being used against Iowa for years, and it really came into focus courtesy of Mr. Lee’s binder. But, whenever someone presses for details everyone clams up like they’re protecting the holy ****ing grail. The coaches should say what they’re dealing with, fight it out in the open. No need to name coaches or other programs, but I think an airing of subtle hints would make other teams look petty as shit.

When you compare how we recruit to how others recruit, having a somewhat open discussion would make us stand out even more. Maybe we’re missing recruits because they buy the false narrative.

I’ve never understood why we allow other programs to lie and then act coy about it instead of calling them out on their bs.
I agree. If things are being done wrong and ethical standards are being broken then it’s a person’s responsibility to attept to have it stopped. One problem with Tom is that he usually holds his personal beliefs to be the only thing of any importance. If he feels a certain way nothing else matters. When that hurts Hawkeye wrestling and or the HWC it becomes more than just about him. Has cost us in the past with recruites and cost us again with bad publicity with the women leaving the HWC.

While I don’t always agree with Gobblin, I love a staunch advocate for the program. I miss the days when the boards were similar to having a beer and wings after a meet and talking wrestling. I’m willing to bet the average age of posters drops every year.

Thanks for the practice updates. I hope our team and our coaches have a great year that reflects the effort and talent spent over the off season.

This thread is a good example of one of the reasons why I've basically quit posting on this board. I'm done wasting time in pissing matches with insecure, Iowa-hating, Iowa-obsessed fools taking pot shots.

The above summary of yesterday's practice was for Iowa fans -- nobody else. Really don't give a crap what anyone else thinks or what kind of garbage they want to post, and I won't dignify any of that nonsense with a reply. Any non-Iowa fans taking cheap shots in this thread would be well-served by some self-examination. Maybe do some thinking about why they're obsessing with what Iowa fans have to say about an Iowa wrestling practice on a Sunday morning two months before wrestling season. Surely there must be more constructive things to be doing with their time and energy than dwelling on what happened in the Iowa room and anonymously hurling insults at someone they don't know from Adam. That's some messed up stuff right there.

To clarify about our coaches, for my fellow Iowa fans (and you internet tough guys can stick this in your ear for all I care): I fully understand that our coaches are just as imperfect as the rest of us. We all have our quirks and flaws. They'd be the first to admit that. But they do stand out in their sincerity and their commitment to being honest and only positive with recruits and their families. I recognize that our staff isn't the only one comprised of good guys. The sport is full of quality people, and I don't mean to imply that this isn't the case. That said, recruiting is a nasty, dirty business in which coaches flat-out lie to recruits and their families, and it pisses me off. I've heard story after story of this crap happening, and I'm sick of it. For the keyboard warriors, that crap doesn't come out of thin air -- it comes from other coaches.

Sadly, virtually every coaching staff that recruits against us uses negative recruiting tactics. Our coaches don't. That sets them apart, and I think that needs to be understood and appreciated by our fans. This isn't my opinion. Ask the parents of any top recruit looking at Iowa, and I can almost guarantee that other staffs have at least used negative tactics against us and that our staff has stayed above that. Based on frustration with this dynamic in recruiting, I included that positive plug for our coaches, because I thought it needed to be said.

I don't worship our coaches. I do admire them, and that admiration has been earned by their conduct and their dedication to doing things the right way. Of course I'm a biased fan and I'll always go to bat for my Hawks. Shoot -- I've been a fan for almost half a century and Iowa wrestling is a passion my dad and I have shared all of my life. Like many of you, it's a way of life for our family. Of course it means a lot to me. Of course there will be some emotion in that. Of course I'll praise our guys when they earn it. If some idiot behind a keyboard wants to call me creepy, cult-like, etc., that's his/her problem. And I do think he/she does have issues, which is sad.

Had to get that off my chest for my fellow Iowa fans. Good luck putting up with the idiots. I'm out.
WDM this is exactly why you should continue to post, do not let them win by not posting. We need to have guys like you that are on front lines and are willing to pass on the knowledge, otherwise this would be just like any of the other boards.

Calling them out and throwing it in the open from the coaching staff would be an example of negative recruiting. Perfectly fine them staying tight lipped

Too busy drooling over Brands to watch the wrestling from what I gather.
Crabby, if there's anything for you to learn today, it's that we're fans and we love our coach and our team. It's not a cult, and it's not like some scheming, win-at-all-costs program either. We attract great people. They give it all they got, and we love them for it. Is that so hard to understand?

'Cause we're better than that. It serves us to be better.

I thought it was a really good practice. It was really cool to see all the alums come through to watch. But I really could have used an old-school church fan in there, cause it was HOT ;)
Right on! What were some of your favorite moments there? Do you remember anyone that stood out or surprised you? Any insight is much appreciated.

I got there at 11:30 so I only saw the back end. I don't have anything earth shattering to share...but a couple of observations:
- Willie was there. I exchanged pleasantries with him. Very nice and he was interacting with people in attendance the entire time.
- Seabolt was there.
- Lees and Warners were there.
- Someone mentioned it was hot...it was! Colin Cole and his wife were leaving as we were entering Carver. Kevin Collins was our host and he introduced us to Colin and his wife. Colin's wife was like ... "it is so hot down there...be careful!"
- Watching Jaydin was a real treat. I had my 16 year old son with me. I was thankful he could see what Jaydin was putting himself through. No one was pushing him. He was pushing himself.
- I was with a couple of guys who didn't know anything about wrestling. We snapped a pic of Dennis, Spencer, Tom and Terry against the back wall. Olympian, future Olympian, Olympian, and Olympian. These guy couldn't believe it...all in the basement of Carver!
- Bull looked to be working on some super technical stuff. Like hand placement on certain holds from the top position. Kaleb and Max were going live (not with each other). Spencer and Dennis were working together. Mostly from neutral. They were in the far back corner.
- Saw Ben Keuter there. I only recognized him b/c his name was on the back of his shirt.

Is it a prerequisite for clowns fans to be jealous bitches?
No jealousy here. I like, and root for Iowa. Hope they continue smashing PSU for years to come.

When people start worshiping the ground a wrestling coach walks on, I find it very strange. Cael and Brands both get this treatment from their fans. I’m respect the hell out of coach Brands. Amazing coach, one of the best wresting coaches in the world. Second coming? Not seeing it.

Pointing out that they live their lives with ethics and integrity doesn’t usually qualify as ‘worship’. If that is your criteria than have at it. You are on this board when things don’t go as hoped for. ‘Worship’ excludes those types of responses.

The moment that sticks the most in my head was watching Charles Matthews and Jaydin Eierman workout at the end. They were hauling what looked like a 75-100 pound weight ball back and forth, the length of the room, then grinding out pushups at the conclusion of each round. It was my first time meeting Matthews, but I have known Eierman since he was a kid. It was cool to see kids on different ends of the competition pendulum, yet here they were driving and pushing each other as complete equals, none bigger than the other. That was cool to see.

Crabby won’t like me saying this because it’s “coach worship”, but that comes from examples from the top. Tom is frequently the first person in the room wiping down mats by himself. I don’t know for certain but I’d assume a lot of schools have managers or somebody do this but like you said, complete equals and Coach Brands wouldn’t ask any of his wrestlers to do anything he wouldn’t do himself.

Hope to see ALOT more of you in Iowa City in the near future coach! Best of luck on the upcoming HS season!

Sorry dude but you are just being a jerk! STOP with the worship horse crap. IOWA fans like/admire our coaches as do many others due to who they are. That is to say, from how they competed, to how they coach, to the standards they set and have everyone in the program adhere to.

It the grand and overall scheme of life. This may be a very small thing. Still it is their thing and it is our thing. I do not live in Iowa, I did not Wrestle for the HAWKS. I grew into a big fan starting with Gable when I first started Wrestling in 1977.

Winning is one thing, but it is the many other "small" things that really stand out. Gable changed American Wrestling and has been a great ambassador to the sport for many, many years. It goes even deeper though. I call IOWA the epicenter of Wrestling and I believe that this is 100% true. I wish where I lived was honestly, but it is what it is. The history goes so far back that I am certain most will not know, Farmer Burns, Frank Gotch, giant mats, IOWA STYLE and yes the Brands Brothers etc......

IOWA has set the standard for the past 40-50 years now. There is many reasons for this and just look at how many coaches they have produced!!! So you tip your hat, give credit where credit is due. OUR guy, on OUR board wrote a excellent post as far as we are all concerned. It is the good stuff we all want to hear!

So kindly, go find something better to do with your life man!

So it sounds like a well run...highly energetic Hawkeye Wrestling Practice. Lots of good technique and that's good for this stage of the season and some early season conditioning by some guys and lots of individual wrestling to get more experience. It seems we appreciate our coaching staff and we heap praise upon them for leading us to National Titles and lots of victories' as well. I guess if you AREN'T winning any kinds of titles or not even winning many dual meets that you as a fan, would tend to be a whiney Bitch type who would have no other choice than to troll a winning team's board and complain about the coach's winning ways.

WWDM you’ve been a respected poster on this board for a long time and I implore you to ignore rival posters negative posts. Your post is the specific reason I for one signed up for HR close to ten years ago. Living on the west coast it is very difficult to get any wrestling information let alone Iowa info. I rely on posters like you to paint a picture of the program and the atmosphere in the room. Hearing that Spencer is moving well and getting after it with an Olympian is encouraging and gets me fired up ( anyone else worry in the off season about his health?). You are a valuable member of this board and I appreciate the insight and observations.

Agreed. The board is better with guys like @WWDMHawkeye , though i understand staying out of the fray.

plus it opens you up to stuff like me recognizing you when we sat next to each at a restaurant one time :)

Agreed, and I don't think that Tom Brands would like that either. He's not a saint, he's just a damn fine wrestling coach.

If we’re better than that then we should stop bringing it up. Address it publicly, say that it’s all bs, or ghost it and leave it alone. That’s all I’m saying.
Then leave it alone. As fans, we can call out anyone we want. As coaches, TnT have to take the higher path.
As they say, don't wrestle with pigs, because you'll both get dirty and the pigs like it.
