Gonzaga is quick which always gives us problems, but, we shot it horribly from the field and from the ft line, rebounding was awful. We can and will be better at both. We win this game with only average numbers. We’ll get them next time. Pretty good experience for our guys.

I'm disappointed in the effort for much of the game. Disappointed in Fran's inability to see JBo was hurting the team and needed to sit on favor of Joe T.

Having said that, the team fought back in the second half. They make some open 3s and free throws and are right in that game.

Iowa is a legit good team and it's going to be a fun year.

Didn’t want them to get ran off the court which it looked like what would happen.

Joe T needs way more minutes though.

Fran blew it with his sub patterns. He should have subbed a defensive unit early. He also should have played JoeT more and should have put JT back in sooner after pulling him for two turnovers. JBO needs to learn from this game. He had elite long armed defender on him in Suggs...he needed to let game come to him.

Lot of things to learn from this game for Fran and the players. I think Fran needs to have a defensive unit that can play man to man. Playing so much zone vs elite team like Gonzaga, you are going to lose if they are hitting 3pt shots.

We couldn't hit our 3's all game. While Gonzaga who are not known for making 3's goes 50%. Suggs couldn't miss.

We didn't fold when it got to 20. Sucks to lose. Losing this game at the end of the year doesn't hurt us.

We found out what we already knew. Our D needs to get better. If the 3's aren't falling it will be tough against top teams.

Yep. The prize is the NCAA tourney. This loss really doesn't have to negatively impact that. I'd much rather have them play a really good team now and take their lumps. They are a mature enough bunch that they can learn from this.
I agree. Hopefully the loss is a check on some of the players and fans. We will be just fine

Reality test at this point and a good one.

Nothing to be worried about except the usual questions regarding defense.

But Gonzaga was lights out. All the talk about a team not taking / hitting 3's that often, and they bury us just like last time in the NCAA.

Live and learn, lots of upside to this team. Gonna be fun. I would rather have this than squeak by a Gonzaga team that had a bad game, but then lose to freakin Purdue.

Totally agree...
if Iowa shoots any where close to their power 5 shooting %‘s from 3 and FT, the game is an Iowa win.

Iowa misses 12 FT including front ends, and shoots 55% and 18%, and for the most part both were wide open.

the rebounding, defensive schemes and player rotations must be addressed.

My biggest disappointment is that we single out players individually for a team loss. Our TEAM defense is not elite 8 or maybe not even sweet 16. Most of us acknowledge this. We have to cover that up with great decisions, shooting and rebounding. Lots of poor decision making on some turnovers and also passed up some good 3s and took other bad 3s. I know they're all good when they go in. Flush this loss and win the Big which would be a huge accomplishment by itself...

Agree.

It’s nice to see Wieskamp put together a strong sequence of games recently.

Wieskamp’s production and Iowa’s success last year was directly correlated. If he keeps playing at a high level Iowa will be a contender.

Couldn't agree more. We shot so poorly and Gonzaga couldn't miss and we were still in it until the end. As you said though, Joe T should have had more minutes, I also would have liked to see Ke Murray with more minutes than P Mac. However, my biggest concern/disappointment was with the perceived lack of effort at times. Watching Gonzaga out hustle our guys to chase down rebounds was so frustrating. On par with JBo telegraphing long passes time and time again.

Exactly. They are good, very good...but if we could have shot just average for us, we win. We lost to #1, hopefully we play them again in March.

Disagree. It wasn't horrible and wasn't the sole issue of us losing, but they got away with a lot of hand checking that should have been fouls.
Did anyone notice Suggs traveling call when we were pressing? I replayed it in slomo and he turned, caught the ball and started to run but our guy was right there and he plowed into him. But his feet didn't move. How can it be traveling - it was a blatant foul!!!!

Free throw shooting and 3pt shooting need to be better against a team like Gonzaga. Frankly, our defense was fine and good enough to win the game. But if you’re going to play olé defense and give Gonzaga open looks, then you need to be able to crash the boards. That was what I was most disappointed in today. There was a stretch in the second half where we had a fantastic opportunity to really tighten the game up and Gonzaga was crashing the offensive boards and scoring quite a few second chance points.

3pt shooting aside (because every team is prone to poor shooting games), Gonzaga’s seven point advantage in second chance points and Iowa’s 12 missed free throws were well more than the difference in the game. With as experienced a team as we have, the poor free throw shooting is, quite frankly, unacceptable

Good grief. Iowa will be fine. Poor shooting day from 3 and at the foul line. CJ getting his second foul in the first half and JBo having an off shooting day were huge factors.
This team continued to compete but just couldn't make the big shot to make it really interesting.
I'm sure both teams have plenty to work on moving forward. I just like our chances in the long run. Iowa will be a tough out at any point this season.

What are you talking about? Don’t you think they are saying the same thing, that they should have shot better than 14-24? That’s not even 60% for them either.

Agree with most in this thread.

More Joe T
Better defensive rebounding in second half
A normal free throw percentage

And the Hawks are in the game. I still feel very good about this year.

A lot of good points here. I think Iowa didn't play well for many of the reasons listed and they still had several opportunities to get back into the game. My biggest disappointments is that Iowa is a veteran team but panicked when Gonzaga grew the lead. Too many bad shots were taken when they should have been going through Garza more.
