I can't believe it took KF three halves ...

... of football to undermine his players with horrible coaching.

Running at the end of the half and then going for an a maybe 1% chance with a fake field goal? It's pretty rare when both the game time and half time announcers both say it was a horrible coaching call.

I think maybe I'll watch Michigan this year. They have the offense we could / should have, and a coach who doesn't look like he's ready to head home and watch Desert Car Kings.

He should be fired at half time for that, going to be awesome when Iowa loses by 3 points too that he likely passed on.

Just f**** awful

Wasted a bunch of time running the football on second and third downs then try a high risk play with little chance of succeeding.

WTF??

Very strange choices in that set of plays.

Yeah I think the half time guy said it best ... "Kirk Ferentz still coaches for Iowa, right?" The choice to run was conservative; the next play call was just idiotic to the point of practically looking like you are trying to shave points or something.

These "wth" decisions will continue until Kirk is replaced. Why not bootleg on the 3rd and short? Why not throw the ball on those last 2 plays?

He'll say at his presser that we 'could have been down only by 3 at half, but decided to make everyone happy by not being predictable and trying the fake field goal.'

All the people who thought sunshine was the answer do you think coaching might really be the answer?

you guys seem like decent fans.

Quit questioning your coach all the time. He's a great coach playing with average talent doing above average things.

Iowa had success while the rest of the Big Ten was down. Don't expect championships. Just be thankful we have a great person coaching this team and he develops great players and men.

Celebrate the win!

Very impressive second half Hawks. CJ. Defense. Etc. damn Iowa city will be rocking next Saturday nite. Can't wait. How appropriate that King comes thru with a big return and then a pick. Thinking of you Tyler

HawkNole09, if you're right about the average talent, who do you think recruited ALL of those guys? Why, it was none other than that brilliant mind of KF. And ya know what? Fans would love to stop first-guessing the guy. And for that to happen, all KF has to do is realize it's 2015 and it's OK to score boatloads of points. He and his GD offensive coordinator are like speed bumps on the Interstate: Even if ya have a Corvette, it's gonna be an unnecessarily bumpy ride. Sad but true. Nothing new.

Just asking, but did you happen to watch the half time guys back in the studio, Wannstedt said he had no problem with the call, thinking the Ferentz knew he could win the game in the second half so it was worth the shot at the end of the half. I didn't have a problem with the call in its self, just wished he would have called the time out with maybe 8- 10 seconds left so if they would have gotten the first down and not a TD go out of bounds and kick the field goal. Nice to see he is doing some of the exotics as Fry called.

I love threads like this. Full of little bitches crying because everything doesn't go for 100 yards a touchdown.

Well you knew we would lose to the Clones and now you are pissed about it. Have fun boys. Going to be a fun year. Sounds like an awful lot of people pissed off about a win. Maybe it's just me. LOL.

That play was still one of the dumbest things he's ever called.

Call it with 30 seconds left and its a great call, but the conversion rate there is probably less than 1 percent.
The team overcame the Coaching Staff, somehow. What could possibly make you think a short little kicker is going to outrun an entire defense for 45 yards? Kirk at halftime "we thought we could make it". WTF!

Go ahead and do it if you need a 1st down and you've got time on the clock. That would have been the most AMAZING touchdown ever scored in the History of College Football. That's why it was really, really stupid. I think the guy has COMPLETELY lost his mind. And there was no one there to tell him it was a HORRIBLE idea? Jeezuz.

Glad we managed to beat the Mighty Cyclones finally. The PLAYERS didn't give up. Good job guys.

This is funny because of what I heard listening to the Husky pregame show on the radio out here in Washington. Wins = players overcoming bad coaching, loses = bad coaching. Dick Baird a former assistant under Don James says most fans blame everything on the coach unless you are unbeaten. If you are unbeaten and there is nobody to blame, give all the credit to the players. I thought it was funny.

dont get me wrong I understand what you want from this offense, but I think we'd fail miserably trying to run Oregon's tempo or TCU's spread.

I like the way the Hawks play. We develop players and then ask them to grind. Hawks grind. And then we boot and play action.

And all the while we tighten from the other end and just keep coming. And when we've tightened enough they force mistakes.

And that's been Hawkeye football

Seriously, do you not understand the level of stupidity involved in the game management at the end of the first half? Once I've seen everything, Ferentz manages to do something that shocks me even more. That having been said, good win, and yes, that is a compliment to the players AND coaches.

Seriously do you not understand that we won the game today and you are here reaching for things to bitch about. We were gashing them all game long on the ground. The first half included. we had 180 yards rushing when we chose to run. It didn't work. Game thread was saying in the first quarter we are running at will and no we start passing. I had no problem with the call to run it twice and no problem with the fake fg. I had no problem with the pass on 1st down for 6 to McCarron. I just dont' assume I know what would happen if we did the opposite of what we did.

Maybe Wannstedt who has a ring knows what he was talking about. He said he though KF felt pretty good about where he was in that game. I think KF knew they were dominating both LOS. They had some sacks but for the most part we ran the ball right down there throat on most plays. Minus the two you are all pisssed off about.

I watched Jim Harbaugh today waste a time out at the end of his half. Bad clock management happens in almost every game. You just think it only happens at Iowa because when Iowa does it you amplify it. Shit happens. My post was only pointing that all fan bases think their coaches suck at clock management. Truth.

Great coach, do you know anything about football? really, great coach???

I am all for Kirk trying ANYTHING different than the status quo. However, that does not include miracles. Was everyone in the stadium and watching on National TV surprised? Sure. Nobody could believe you'd be so stupid to try and run a kicker 45 yards with no time left on the clock. Great. We were all surprised, as your players probably were in a tight ballgame with an underdog we rarely beat, and you take potential points off the board for................. why? Insane. And a 40 yard field goal to boot. Not 58 yards and highly unlikely to make.

I will however give them credit (sort of, not sure it was them) for a couple of STUNNING plays that were undeniably called in from another Coaching Staff. I presume Beathard was hearing the Patriots Broadcasters on the radio, and they said to throw deep out of the end zone, and to throw long to the corner of the end zone to a guy who I believe dropped the only other pass thrown to him today. Wierd game. Good win. (the Punter even showed up, very odd)

Yep we won. That's a great accomplishment by the players and coaches in a hostile environment! Last minute of second have was stupid!

Analysis complete in two sentences. I win!

Add that to your list of 101 snappy come backs and zingers. Dude try to enjoy the win no matter how much you are pissed off today. LOL.

Ive said this at least 100 times. Fire KF, see if I care. I don't think KF is a great coach. However, the guy you hate for running at the end of the half is the same guy you must hate from throwing to McCarron late in the game. Right?

Exactly, the only issue that I had was not leaving some time on the clock in case we didn't score on the fake so we could have still had time to kick a FG.
Doesn't anyone think that the two runs which helped center the ball on the field were to set up the fake?

Great win. I'm celebrating. But that doesn't mean we can't make some observations. The play calling at the end of the half was abominable. KF knows how to build a program, but has a below average gameday IQ when it comes to the end of halves/clock management. It's not going to get better either, he's getting older and his IQ is only dropping. He just needs to stay out of the last two minutes of the halves. Last year's failure to call a TO to get the ball back after the ISU kick was almost equally boneheaded.

He is what he is.

Of course, absolutely no credit whatsoever for the 2nd half adjustments galore that enabled the victory...musta been dumb luck. Couldn't have been the coaching.

Iowa not stubbing their toes these first two games after an entire off-season of predicting exactly that must really chap the haters' hides. Their long awaited grand implosion plan isn't working out like they swore it would. Meanwhile, Bret Bielema The Savior loses at home to a MAC team.

I wonder how Hog message board posters are treating him tonight.

My two cents (probably worth less):

Koehn is actually a very good athlete, with very good speed for a kicker (4.6-4.7).

Personally, I would have taken the chance to kick for 3 points there, and saved that fake for similar field position in a situation where the clock wasn't an issue.

I like the overall philosophy of taking more calculated risks. They don't always pay off (that's why they're called risks), but over the long run they will pay off.
