My son has been admitted to ISU and we are making our visit in April. We're not from Iowa, but are Midwesterners. Mostly interested in places to stay near campus. Locally owned restaurants, we're not drinkers so beer/alcohol selection isn't important. Staying an extra day to check out the town, so any local attractions you enjoy ? I know they're your rivals and I expect to get some grief in this thread, good natured obviously, but any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Food
The Cafe
Cornbread BBQ
The locals will prob say Hickory Park. But prepared to be herded and underwhelmed

Places to stay
Pretty limited. Gateway hotel is probably best bet.

Attractions
Oh boy.

Stay away from north side El Azteca. They have food poisoning events all the time.

Cafe Beaudlaire has a great brazialian burger. The Spice has great Thai food. The Mucky Duck has great fish and chips.

Stay away from Hickory Park and Jethros.

Sight seeing......well I can give you a personal tour of where all the people have been shot or stabbed the last 5 years.

I'll never go there again. I have gotten food poisoning there more than once. The south side I've had no problems.

If you go on Iowa's food poisoning website N. Side one is constantly getting busted. In fact, they were forced to shut down to completely scrub down the place. Still are having complaints all the time. It is your gut, but you are playing russian roulette

Hey Jimmy, what's your go to for Mexican in Ames?

If you are coming from the east schedule a stop in Iowa City on your way to central Iowa. Much better restaurants, more things to do than Ames, etc. Hell your kid might even see the light and choose the good guys.

Unless your son is studying agriculture or engineering. Iowa State kinda makes sense for those.

I’m sorry your son is a bad decision maker with poor taste.

Ts and Ps.

My advice. We aren’t that familiar with Ames, but stay there 1x per year for the Iowa Special Olympics.

Courtyard off Duff is decent and close to campus. I’d try to find places to eat on or near campus, for the college atmosphere. Try the Pizza Pit, Cafe Beaudelaire, Macubana, or Tosca.

Attractions? Not much help there unless you road trip to Des Moines. Make sure to hit Cy’s Locker for Cyclones gear.

You just have a weak body.

Ames?

Food:

BBQ: Cornbread or Watcha Smokin in Luther. Cafe Beadelaire for Brazilian, Dublin Bay for Irish. The Cafe is good depending on what you like with baked goods.

Things to do….nothing. Tip cows?

Go to Des Moines for entertainment.

You got food poisoning at a place “more than once”?!? It would only take one instance for me to never return to that eating establishment. 🥴
