My Ex-wife and I were visiting Iowa back in 2006 before we moved to Marion from the military... We were trying to figure out where we were headed post service and I wanted to move to Iowa and it was around Veterans Day weekend so we were in uniform...

We were walking around the stadium near the Fry football facility when he approached us...

He approached and shook my hand and said " thank you for being here... What do you wanna see?" I told him we were just looking around it was her first time in Iowa city...

So he said come with me... I think I can show you guys some cool stuff and he gave us a self guided tour into places I never imagined I would be.

After seeing the old locker room and weight room and meeting a bunch of players practice was about to start so he got our names and asked if we wanted to stick around?

So before the practice began he announced he had SK2 and SK1 Monaghan from Norfolk VA here... And we should be honored...

After the walk-through/practice ended we got high fives and handshakes and autographs

All of that was literally being right place right time

But it was experience you can't shake and the Ex and I both used our GI bills to get degrees from the u of I...

When people talk about Kirk 2.0 or New Kirk I say old Kirk never left but like wine he gets better with age

Before some jack @ss asks for pic of ex wife all I can say is she is a great mom and anyone who had been around long enough to know how I messed up I'm begging please don't re post my ignorance from almost a decade ago

I shared the story to remind folks of the quality guy we have at the helm not to be a spectacle.

Great story, indeed, and I, too, thank you for your service. Not at all surprised to hear this about Kirk. I'm sure there are countless similar stories we'll never know. The recent success of the Iowa program literally couldn't have happened to a better guy in the coaching business.

Now, let's go kick some tail at Lucas Oil and keep this thing rollin'!!! GO HAWKS!!!

One in a long line of examples as to why Iowa has been so fortunate to have KF.

I have always given the man the benefit but admittedly wondered last winter if it was time. But I always came back to the thought that Iowa has always been so damn close to getting over the hump to being a great program instead of just good. That kept me on his side each and every time I started to waver.

When you look at KFS career and how many excruciatingly close losses each and every year it always gave me hope that he was so close but just missing that extra something.

So glad he finally made the changes needed and is now cemented as a HOF coach and certainly took over as the greatest coach in iowa history.
