He was a great tradition and I always enjoyed watching him perform as a kid. Always a fun show.

I know...PC...offensive...etc. But I just thought it was good entertainment. I wish we could see it live one more time.

The Politically Correct idiots helped put an end to The Chief. I'm an Illinois alum and am glad I was in school when The Chief was still around and got to see him at every home game.

I also thought he was pretty cool, inspirational even. Illinois tried really hard, insisting "He is not a mascot!" but in the end it wasn't enough.

Anyone know if Illinois has any plans for a new mascot? I would think for purely marketing perspective it would be a good idea.

I'm sure you could find a white frat boy to put on a leather outfit and headdress and dance for you if you search on Craigslist.

I got contacts, what city do you need him in?
I'm not into that sort of thing, but the OP apparently is.

I always found the "chief" schtick at Illinois to be hilariously lame and stupid. I wasn't offended in the least, but getting a frat boy to put on leather and makeup and do a "fancy dance" (that is the real term, I can't make this ish up) is pretty damn amusing, even by idiot Shampoo-Banana standards.

Iowa City, tomorrow, Kinnick @ about 12:30. 50 Yard Line, and he better do the tradition proud. Those who wish to be offended have their right to do so, it's America.

Spoken like you don't have a clue, but this is nothing new. I knew two Chiefs when I was at Illinois (csb) and neither of them were in fraternities. The outfit he wore was from the Ogalala Sioux tribe. And his schtick was an authentic form of Indian tribal celebration. But you can feel free to go on with your misconceptions. And idiot Champaign-Urbana standards? Where do you think Iowa ranks as a University? 82nd. Congrats. You're below Michigan State and Indiana...

Tonto says, :"Chief Illiniwek, him now paleface who puff
peace pipe too much. The NCAA send mixed smoke signals
to campus of Illini. Camp fires no long burning in Illinois and
tepee village. White man speak with crooked tongue about
warrior dance at sporting events."

If I were an Illini fan, I'd miss Jim Sheppard more than the Chief. Longtime Memorial Stadium PA guy who managed to strike the right balance between professionalism and having an actual personality, and loyal to the university through many down seasons. So naturally the Illini dumped him for some XFL castaway to yell and scream for every Illini first down.

Jim Sheppard was fantastic. He was also great at basketball games. He was essentially run off in the mid 90s (when I was there) and there was no real reason given as to why...

Did you mean mid-2000s, or was he taken off basketball in the mid-90s? I remember listening to him at Memorial as recently as 2004 and 2006 when the Hawks played the Illini. Then in 2008, they had the new guy making the calls...and it was far from an improvement.

Traveling to most of the different Big Ten stadiums as an Iowa fan, Sheppard was the best PA guy I heard at any venue. You could tell he was a big Illini backer, but his announcing was never overdone--just a little more "oomph" on his "1st and 10 for the Illini!" calls, and then an appropriately subdued tone whenever something went wrong for the home team. It was the best balance I've seen between a PA guy being a dispassionate automaton (like *cheerfully* announcing that the visiting team has just scored a backbreaking touchdown) or an over-the-top cheerleader with Vince McMahon antics. I'm not sure why Illinois felt a change was necessary, but from an outsider's perspective, it was a mistake--Sheppard was great.
