LA residents want answers and protection, well then pay for it; 3 million gallons of stored water was used

As George Will always said, people say they want small government, until something bad happens. Then they want lots of government and they want it right now.

He said that in the 80’s btw. This is nothing new.
Well they certainly don't pay for or have small government in Cali do they?
What people actually want is effective government regardless of the "size".

Yep… and more people and more issues just complicate that goal…Cali has many issues that complicate this goal.. great climate, earthquakes, drought, wildfires, huge population concentrations, booming economy…natural resources and beauty…

10 zillion gallons of stored water wasn't going to stop this fire.

It still would have been like a squirt gun against it.

I swear I live in the absolute dumbest possible timeline with the absolute dumbest people.

It's a natural disaster, it's a hurricane of fire. The only possible prior solution would have been to not build up the areas that were built up and maybe, maybe do something about climate change.

MAGA are absolute complete scum and will now attack and try to gain political advantage over absolutely everything that happens in the world (except of course when there's a mass shooting event--then how dare you libs politicize it).

LOL that these hyper-capitalist, anti-tax, libertarian a-holes are now bitching that LA doesn't spend enough money on their fire dept.
This. The people gleefully pointing fingers here and elsewhere (for political reasons) have zero clue on the scale and speed of this event and that no waterline fire suppression would have stopped it. You don’t fight wildfires in 60-90 mph winds with firehouses and a hydrant system. It’s laughable.

This type of event is impossible to stop once it gets going. You could put some giant fire breaks in but the land is so valuable that will never happen because they would have to be really wide and/ or high due to wind. Just not financially feasible.

If we want to protect ourselves in these increasing times of fire, storms and floods about the only way is revised building methods and materials that are strong and capable of withstanding wind, water and fire. Basically about the only thing we can start doing is building everything out of concrete, stone and steel, inside and outside, in these areas of high risk the structure and walls and floors remain intact. For sure this is how houses should be built on the coast. So when the cat 4 storm hits, your structure does not blow or wash away and any flooding that gets in the house, you simply replace the furniture and appliances and other things, after you clean out the sand and wash out the house. No more wood frames and drywall and wood floors and wood roofs.

I predict this will become an emerging industry pretty fast, especially with much of this happening in wealthier areas. The next status thing will be showing off your new second house that can withstand just about anything.

Exactly, and you know what it would be like in LA and other cities if private enterprises built and owned and operated all the freeways and expressways. There would be tons of toll stops, it would take hours to get anywhere, yeah you would have paid less in taxes over the years for road construction but you would be paying tolls every mile or so

Sooo...run entirely new waterlines across all of southern california? 827 square miles of the LA basin? What about San Diego? Them too?
No, it doesnt have to be a separate system. And I think they should set up desalination factories because water is one of their big issues all the time not just when there are fires. All those cities out west are draining the Colo river dry

You keep saying this. California has the highest taxes in the country.
Yeah, and Iowa keeps cutting their taxes and our DNR oversight is shrinking a lot, our waters are getting really bad, our schools are getting drained of money (a lot of it going to religious segregationisht schools), our public social services in this state our underwhelming and not doing the job.

And our goofy governor and the Repubs who are so proud of this big surplus of money they have keep turning down free money to feed hungry kids, tens of millions of dollars, because it would cost the State a couple of million to manage the program. They say they have a $2 billion dollar surplus but they wont spend $2 million to feed kids breakfast and lunch or either.

Shortsided chicanery and that budget surplus belongs to the people. They wont spend it because they have no empathy

The solution for Los Angeles isn't more water it's less people. Could you build a water system that could handle this widespread of a fire I suppose, but the costs would be astronomical. It's not just storing water, you have to have pressure, you need electricity for pumps.

Could you build a city that is more fire resistant? That is an interesting idea to me.
Pressure??? They have hills there, fairly high hills, put the tanks high up . Have you heard of gravity?????

As the Dems generally say about the upcoming Trump presidency…let it burn.
No Dems will try to stop the burning if they can, but the saying is more like "wait to see what shit show happens under Trump"

The “homeless sutuation@ is because they are LA you dipshit! Warmer more moderate weather year round attracts all types of folks! How phuquin’ stupid do you wanna be? You are well on your way…
Do you get the idea a lot of people talk and text before they think about what they are going to say?

"The social media blame game was in bad faith, but was it possible to see it as progress, for the cause of adaptation and resilience, that those who’d spent a generation conspiring to drown the government in a bathtub were now howling that it must be doing more?"

Those forests, now intimidating heaps of fuel, must be thinned — in California perhaps almost four million acres annually, nearly equivalent to the state’s worst fire season in modern history.

Brushland and scrubland, while trickier, must be managed better too: when possible, with controlled and traditional burning, and, when not, through mechanical thinning and more aggressive use of strategic fire breaks, particularly along ridge lines, and debris clearance especially in those canyons, like firepits, sometimes called jackpots.

On the urban side of the what’s known as the wildland-urban interface, we probably need a program of systematically reducing risk to property by property — retrofitting homes and roofs, eliminating flammable flora, ensuring homes sit clear of anything flammable.

Beyond that, some way of overcoming longstanding NIMBYish resistance, explained less by partisanship or climate denial than a more quotidian mix of lack of urgency, homeowner libertarianism and simple wishful thinking.

And who will pay for this? The people screaming now about political failures - Trump, Musk and the rest - are also those who deny the urgency of the climate crisis, refuse to pay to address it, and support activities and industries that worsen the emissions side of the equation.

Meh. This crap is NOT important! We've got a mountain that needs renaming!

What shortcuts have they made over the years.
Failing to adequately prepare for this disaster including being negligent in the amount of stored water necessary to protect their over building.

Not thrilled as a federal taxpayer seeing my money spent for their negligence and responsibility.

F'em.

Not only do they want small government, but if they have to pay for something, the last thing they want to pay for (or run for election on) is boring infrastructure.

I agree! Also, the landowners in NC that got flooded because they built in a flood plain, F'em! Same with homeowners that decided to own property near a large body of water. F'em!

High risk behaviors in general should be on the individuals dime.

Weigh 500#? Smoke (sorry Trad)? Your health insurance and the taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for medical bills related to your bad choices. You find the money for it or die. Your choice.
