Seems like Dochterman has 'very high praise' for Tyrone Tracy. From what I have read, I think this could be the surprise guy from fall camp. IMHO, BMOC.

I've been about as negative as anyone on this front in the past, but recruiting is definitely improving. Bell and Wallace are kicking ass. Polosek is finding gems in Wisconsin. Morgan solid as a rock. Woods has always done a pretty good job and Copeland is making his mark.

The line of demarcation was drawn when Wallace came on board. When you got a guy that looks like Eric Johnson running the recruiting show... yeah, you're gonna struggle. Hope he's better at cooking Butterburgers than he was at selling the program to talented football players.

since Brian was hired the emphasis on getting OL that were close in size to being ready to compete has also been improved. now they are getting 285+ lbs that just need time in the conditioning program and learning in practice.

2020 OL Commit Miller is 6'6 310 lbs. Endres is 6'6 285 lbs as JR's in HS. give these 2 1-2 years with Doyle and they will be something to watch. winning starts in the trenches.

This is the one subject I'm not peachy on. Our recruiting classes the past 5 years have all been in the 40's or worse.

That has translated into a total winning percentage of 65%, including a year going 12-2.

Looking back I really wonder what would of happened if that Rose bowl season didn't happen. Because without that it has been 10 years since the last 10 win season.

this season whats left of that 59th rated class will be RSSR''s . looking at the Starters there are 3 SR starters on offense and 2 starters on defense and there are only 11 players out of 19 players left. that 12-2 season has led to these for classes'
2016 42nd
2017 40th
2018 39th

the last class that was rated in the 30's was in 2011 and the RSSR's of that class were part of that 12-2 season in 2015, just like that class in 2005 that was rated 11th as RSJR's went 9-4 and a number 20 final AP ranking in 2008 and as RSSR's went 11-2 and a number 7 AP final ranking in 2009.

when KF gets a decent recruiting class he produces very good results, this time it looks like he is getting good recruiting classes in more than 1 season..

I agree that recruiting has been KF's biggest shortcoming. I will agree that 2014 and 15 were stinker years for recruiting. Things have improved starting in 16, regardless of class rankings. From the 16 class, Fant, Hockenson, Stanley, A Jackson, and Hooker are almost certain to play on Sunday. That is 5 NFL players in one class. Beyer, Toren Young, Amani Jones, Welch, and Lattimore are all 50/50 NFL prospects. There are other guys in that class that might have a chance, too.
In the 17 class, Wirfs and AJE are NFL bound. There are 7 or 8 other guys who look like they might develop that far. I honestly think 12-14 players from those two classes will play on Sunday. The 18 class is the best class since 05. Recruiting has definitely improved.

I think recently we have seen proof the importance of the 4-5 star kids. With AJE and Wirfs they made immediate impacts on the team. Back int he day it was rare for any freshman to play. But now these kids are coming in better prepared than ever. If we got a Clemson or Ohio State type recruiting class half the starting roster might be freshman.

But I agree the trend has been up the last couple of years. I just don't think getting those big recruits is as high on the importance scale for KF as maybe other programs.

KF has always recruited marquee players. He just hasn't been willing to resort to the same type of sleazery many coaches do. He is stubborn and I disagree with his policies on visits after committing and officials during the season. I believe he would gladly have an entire roster of 4 and 5 stars, though.

its more about building depth at each position. when you look at the DB and how the depth is getting deeper, that is a good thing. the LB'rs are getting deeper and on the DL. this is going to allow them to rotate to keep them fresh all season.

on offense the OL is also getting deeper as is the TE's. the WR's are young with 3 SO's and 3 true FR maybe 4 depending on where Evans ends up.

Tracey looks to be a good slot receiver and it would not surprise me if he was not returning punts or kickoffs. Evan is another that may end up returning KO or punts.

I remember Fry saying his starters could compete with any team in the country, but if injuries hit the reserves could not until they got older.

well with past KF's teams the same could be said about his starters, looking at the improved recruiting in the size and speed the reserves are catching up with the starters,

this is where teams like OSU, Wisconsin, PSU or other teams like them have/had the advatange, if a player went down due to a injury they just plugged in another player with out missing a beat.
take 2016 for example the biggest difference was QB CJ in that 2015 season he accounted for 3047 total yards passing and throwing
in 2016 CJ had 1916 total yards with a -13 yards rushing vs the +237 yards rushing in 2015.

all because he was injured,

Beathard's injuries definitely limited him in 2016. But he also lost Tevaun Smith and HKC. Kittle was great but he was hurt a lot that year. WR was a train wreck.

KF is not the only coach to have a no visit policy after they commit. I agree with it to, KF and his assistant coach are very up front in telling kids to take their visits before committing to make sure it is the one best for them. if they take their visits there is no reason to take any more.

teams like Alabama or OSU can let their commits take visits but as a rule none of them will/do.

with the early signing period and early paid visits can only work in Iowa's favor.

just like in the Rose Bowl the OL went thru a make up with these as new starters. FR Daniels started at LG and both tackles had to be replaced. RB Wieskamp and Canzeri were both hurt. that team suffered multiple injuries as well including CJ,

Iowa still takes a few kids late that some would call fall backs but in the last 3-4 years the number of offers like that are decreasing because they are landing the solid 3 star guys earlier and getting a few 4 stars and a legacy 5 star. The 2nd and 3rd teams will be better and deeper than in years past.

now the late offered kids are walking on. this in itself is still a good thing as KF can still have the best of both worlds. getting the better kids from outside the state while keeping the to instate kids home.

this is needed in a state that does not produce more than 7-9 highly rated players and with Campbell of ISU having a impact on recruiting in state kids this is even more important.

I think Iowa has done a decent job recruiting OL for this class just from the looks of it. But they only offered 4 4-star Offensive tackles. How is that possible when we send so many OL to the league? By the way not getting any commitments from those 4 guys they offered.

Why are 4 and 5 star kids not banging down the door? Same for defensive backs. Doesn't make any sense.

actually Miller and Endres are both 4*'s in ESPN top 300, Britt if/when he commits is being recruited as a center and is rated as a OT. Iowa kids no matter what position very rarely get that 4th * unless they commit to a team outside the state.

about recruiting getting better if this class finishes in the 43 or better. it will be the 4th straight year, the 2nd time in KF's tenure that will have happened with no end in sight of it not getting better with each year.

I think this is a more accurate portrayal. There is no doubt that KF would love to have the highest ranked players he could get, but he's not going to lower himself into the quagmire of corruption thats required to bring in many of these players. There's also a mindset of entitlement from some of these players that will not be tolerated with this staff.
