There is a cost for both. Forcing a ceasefire has no guarantee the war is anything but a breather as Trump spends the rest of his term not arming Ukraine or Europe to the teeth.

Maybe invite all the involved parties to the table and not say the one most affected doesn't hold any cards and doesn't deserve a seat. Act as an impartial mediator and not as a proxy for the attacking country.

I would attempt to negotiate a deal where both countries give something and both get something for peace. Right now the only proposal I am aware Trump is offering is for Ukraine to give a portion of it's profits from rare earth minerals in exchange for Putin to pause the attacks. There are no security guarantees offered to Ukraine and no concessions from Russia.
I don't believe you achieve peace by basically punishing the country that was invaded. Are you aware of a better offer? What would you do @NorthernHawkeye ?

I don’t agree with the demeanor and tone of Trump/JD during the meeting yesterday but they are the ones using the words “end war” where no one else is.
Zelensky and Trump are showmen and yesterday was political theater at its finest. My guess is the back room talks will continue. Ukraine is probably willing to concede mineral extraction but it will all come down to land plain & simple.
Not fun and not cool, but for the fighting to end, Ukraine will need to be willing to re-draw their boundaries. Otherwise, the fighting continues indefinitely towards a stalemate.
But, if Ukraine finally cedes Crimea and parts of the eastern front to Putin, does Russia rest and re-arm and make another push west and we start all over again in a few years? A good argument can be made that would happen and this may also be correct.
I don’t think I would criticize DJT for trying to end the war. That’s noble. But, I think it’s time the right realizes that a 10-15 year stalemate, if fought by Ukrainian troops only (backed by the west) may actually be the best possible outcome. Just outlast Putin and their last fighting age generation. Weird strategy, but maybe the right one).
And the question becomes who in the west will sacrificially support Ukraine? Not just throw them a few bucks and ammo but do enough that it hurts. I think DJT is correct that Zelensky is not fully aboveboard. I think one condition of US support is that Zelensky holds democratic elections and allow their people to decide. And, of course, the CIA will prop up a puppet-candidate AGAIN.
Think any deal is with the paper it’s printed on without major teeth if violated. The fact Trump is cozying up to Putin shows how no peace deal will last. That they are currently negotiating . It will merely be a pause. It will embolden him to go after Baltic States next. Putin is a thug and only respects strength.
Trump gave out a lot of weakness vibes yesterday. Essentially parroting his talking points.
