If a picture is worth a 1,000 words…

@NorthernHawkeye must have me on his ignore list.

If you post something he can't retort to he will just ignore it. That's why I won't expend too much effort on him. He's just a griefer anyway IMO which is a person who derives enjoyment from spoiling a thread for others by posting in a way that is intentionally disruptive and aggravating. Or maybe an energy vampire: An energy vampire is a person who drains the emotional energy of others, sometimes intentionally.

Or both.

There is a cost for both. Forcing a ceasefire has no guarantee the war is anything but a breather as Trump spends the rest of his term not arming Ukraine or Europe to the teeth.
Agree but it just seems this is all a play to force every NATO member in Europe to step up and help the guy on their block. We don’t even live in the same neighborhood but we’re carrying most of the burden. It’s like the US is another HOA down the street who’s been paying to keep up our entryway landscaping and the other HOA’s too. What the heck is wrong with this picture?

I just believe it’s part of a big picture deal to change the dynamic that’s only gotten bigger and more entrenched since 1945. Do I support Pooty Putin and the Russkies? NO. I’m a kid of the generation who practiced getting under my desk and wearing a dog tag. Who was taught the old USSR was very very bad. And I still believe that.

There are people who want this war to continue and there are people who want to find a way to end it.
Which are the evil ones?
Jesus dude. That is one of the dumbest things I have read here, by someone who I don’t think of as a troll. The evil ones are those who invaded and stole 10% of Ukraine, committed war crimes for 3+years, kidnapped and murdered any Ukrainian who they thought would not go along with a new Russian government, leveled towns to rubble, bombed and continues to bomb hospitals and power plants and critical humanitarian infrastructure, and continues to attack Ukraine every single day.

It’s like if there was a home invasion and after this home invader killed part of your family and is holed up in the bedroom, you were able to achieve a stalemate where you didn’t die and he couldn’t take other bedrooms and kill the rest of your family. For now. And then you come in as a hostage negotiator and ask if the home owner is evil for not agreeing to let the home invader live in the bedroom going forward.

Not trying to speak for @noleclone2 but Trump’s rhetoric about ending the war is completely one sided in favor of Russia to the point where he said Ukraine doesn't deserve a seat at the table and holds no cards. Can you list anything he's asked Putin to give up?
I loved Zelensky's response to Trump's, "You have no cards." He said, “I’m not playing cards. I’m very serious, Mr. President. I’m very serious.”

…then a good political cartoon is worth 10,000.
I found Scruddy on Facebook this morning:

Many of you probably watched what took place between Donald Trump and Zelenskyy tonight. Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, you might be thinking to yourself, Oh my God, Donald Trump just screwed up.

However, as a lifelong practitioner of martial arts, strategy, and philosophy, let me explain the difference between what you believe you witnessed and what actually happened.

Donald Trump has been under constant political persecution since the beginning of his first term. Over time, he has learned to be patient and calculated.

Tonight, Zelenskyy was invited to the Oval Office. However, both Trump and JD Vance knew exactly what Zelenskyy was going to do—he would use this opportunity, in front of the American people, to make a power play. Both Trump and Vance anticipated this.

When Zelenskyy began appealing to the emotions of the American people, JD Vance stepped in, accusing him of disrespecting Donald Trump. This was brilliant strategy. It’s important to understand that Zelenskyy is trying to gain access to NATO.

Trump knew this but could not allow it to happen. If Ukraine joins NATO, the U.S. would be bound by NATO’s collective defense agreement—an attack on one is an attack on all.

Now consider the larger implications: Ukraine and Russia despise each other. If Ukraine were to become a NATO member, any future skirmish between them would obligate the U.S. to enter into direct conflict with Russia. This would mean World War III. And if that happened, China would have to choose a side—they would almost certainly align with Russia.

So what you witnessed tonight was a setup. Trump and JD Vance knew that the only way to achieve peace was to strategically align, at least on the surface, with Russia. Why? Because Russia would never sign a peace treaty if Ukraine were admitted into NATO.

This is why Trump dismantled Zelenskyy’s argument. And when Zelenskyy, seeing his play failing, tried to backtrack and offer a treaty, Trump refused.

Zelenskyy’s real intent was clear—he would not agree to peace unless security guarantees were in place. But what was he actually saying? That NATO must accept Ukraine. However, Russia would never agree to peace, knowing that NATO, their historical adversary, would surround them.

Zelenskyy, Putin, and Trump all knew this. Zelenskyy, thinking he had Democrats' support, believed he could make this bold move on live television. But Trump and Vance saw right through it and outmaneuvered him.

They knew that, in the short term, Democrats and the media would try to use this moment against them. But they also knew they had two years before midterms to prove their strategy was the right one. So they held their ground—brilliantly so.

Now, Zelenskyy will have no choice but to back down and accept Trump's terms. But here’s the genius part—Trump is actually
protecting Ukraine without dragging the U.S. into war.

By negotiating a mineral deal, Trump ensures that Americans will be involved in Ukraine’s mining industry. This prevents Russia from launching an invasion, because attacking Ukraine would mean endangering American lives—something that would force the U.S. to respond.

Trump played both sides like a master chess player. In the end, Zelenskyy will have no choice but to concede, because without U.S. support, Ukraine cannot win a prolonged war against Russia. And once U.S. companies have mining operations in Ukraine, Putin will be unable to attack without triggering massive international consequences.

Don’t underestimate Donald Trump. In this game of chess, he’s 10 moves ahead of everyone.

Your last two paragraphs. You know like calling Trump’s intentions noble and insinuating the CIA has anything to do with causing this from past meddling.
I think fighting Putin is necessary but I also would love to see an end to unnecessary death. When did not wanting dying become uncool? I don’t want to give Russia an inch but I also would be happy if the killing stopped today.

And yes, for better or for worse, our own CIA along with Russia has meddled in the past in Ukraine and Eastern Europe governments & elections. They prop up candidates, we prop up candidates. Same ol’ shit just a different day.

I'm not underestimating Donald Trump, but this mistakes his motives. He doesnt give a **** about Ukraine and he hates Zelensky. Zelensky knows that Trump's more than willing to sacrifice his country to collect the natural resources and get into business with Putin who he sees as his natural ally.

If you look at the contributions measured against their GDP. America is certainly not carrying most of the burden. If you compare it to military budgets, the gap is wider.

There are people who want this war to continue and there are people who want to find a way to end it.

I want Russia to go back home, and Ukrainians want their lands back. So who is the evil one . . . Putin or Zelensky. Remember this was all about weeding out the Nazi's. Now you have Trump and Vance trying to make Zelensky out to be a bad guy because he won't accept a bad deal in bad faith by Trump and Vance.

I can’t and that is why I wrote why it makes sense to fight this war even if it lasts another decade.
if that’s doable to achieve stalemate or better with ukrainian troops yes. but how realistic is that i suppose is the question. the counterargument that it’s ukr’s decision to make is a valid one but they might have to risk carrying on with feckless support from eu who might prove the world wrong but have to date done little beyond cheer leading despite allegedly being capable of steamrolling a weakened russia.

I find this interesting to say the least.
And I will say again that Trump is seeing an 80 year old status quo in Europe that is dragging down the American taxpayer and it’s got to change. His actions WRT Ukraine are part of the big picture and it certainly looks pretty messy at this point.

Okay I’ll bite. Please give the details on how or why Putin is Trump’s natural ally.

It's only dragging on us as taxpayers if we keep allowing Putin territory, time to rearm, and economic relief.

Call 3 years or 10 of Putin being bled in Syria and Ukraine too long and too many lives or a foolish amount of time to not put a foot on their throats as a collective western world. Literally both can be true if used in context together.

A ceasefire under the proposed terms is exactly what Russia wants. No additional draft has been called for in Russia in how long? If they thought it was a benefit with an acceptable cost to lean harder on Ukraine, then why aren't they?

Yep. All the more reason Zelensky should hold elections and let their people make these decisions. The Ukrainians need to decide knowing Europe’s resolve is more in words than action and the growing trend with the people of the US is that they are exhausted playing world police.

Zelensky per their laws doesn't have to do that, but if he did what percentage of the vote would you consider a referendum?

He sees himself as a conservative strongman like Putin. Neither one has any moral compass and both have a penchant for exacting retribution against anyone they see as being a threat or having done them wrong. Trump has expressed admiration on several occasions and at times envy for the freedom that Putin has in doing whatever he likes as the defacto king of Russia. And finally, he vehemently despises Zelensky and sees him as a personal adversary. The saying of the enemy of my enemy is my friend holds true here.

So THIS is where all the straws went.

Always a good look to side with Russia & North Korea.
NoKo is sending teenagers who have been told they were being sent to fight against South Koreans and instead are front line fodder with inadequate training.
The article in yesterday’s WSJ with two NoKo captives who were wounded and are being cared for by the Ukrainians was tremendously enlightening.

And yet you continue to defend Trump and Putin.
