Illinois - Iowa (1985) in the rain

What year was it that Iowa kicked their (I think at illinois?) butt when they had 3 STUD llinebackers and we were underdogs??? I think we smoked them pretty good. this would have been under coach Fry.

We also buried them in 1990 in Champagne. Keith Jackson was the announcer.

I was a Freshman that year at Iowa - that may be the coldest game I can remember because of the wins and poor planning - the end zone seats were fairly empty by the Third Quarter because it was like 50-0

Man, really wish I had been old enough to remember that season and that team.

Crazy, seeing Iowa quarterbacks dropping back to pass in the 4th quarter with a 50 point cushion. And they were throwing in bad weather. Wow.

I feel deprived I never got to see him live. And was too young to remember watching on TV. I'm sure I did, my dad watched every game, I was just too young.

My favorite Hawkeye. Extremely accurate. Great decision maker. Very classy. Just the perfect college QB. You just didn't seem to get anxious because it was 3rd and 8 when Long was under center.

That '85 team was so dam good. Lost to tOSU on the road - tough game. Lost the Rose Bowl thanks to Ronnie "the Goat/Cheater" Harmon.

Back when the iowa lockerroom was in the northeast stands and the players had steps to come down hayden had pictures put up of their big wins as you headed down the stairs.
Most were about 10x14.
Had a picture from the game plus yhe date and score.
Last picture was about 20x40 and a picture from that game with the score 59-0!!!!
Hayden made a point to show every recruit from illinois that picture.

That was before there were nets behind the goalposts, and the fans were in the habit of throwing the football around the stadium after a touchdown XP (as well as the bota bags that were so popular). Iowa was scoring so fast in that game, at one point I recall three footballs being cycled around the stadium. Yes, it was glorious.

Rose bowl sucked. I saw the fix and didn't know there was one. Lol

I passed up a trip to Hawaii to see that game and never regretted it.

I remember Illinois had quite inexplicably curb-stomped top-5 ranked Iowa in '83 in Champaign 33 - 0. So when we got to 59 points in '85 I was hoping like crazy for just one more TD to double up their whoopin' from '83.

The ol' SMU quarterback liked him some offense and the fans loved it.
