I'm betting I know what was going through Archie Griffin's mind tonight...

when he was asked to present the MVP award named after him to Connor Cook. It certainly triggered what I think probably was his memory for me.

Woody Hayes and Archie Griffin probably had some real bad memories from back in 1974 when they lost to MSU at Spartan stadium by the same score Iowa lost to MSU tonight at 16-13, and that game went down to the wire too and had the Big Ten office review the end of it, Woody Hayes punching fans at the end of it, and questions being asked whether time ran out before Archie Griffin tried to carry a ball in to the end zone, which was ruled not to have happened, and MSU retain that victory.

I personally attended that game with my dad when I was in high school and he worked at MSU then, and we celebrated quite a bit then. I guess ironically, seeing Archie Griffin give that trophy away at the end solidly had me thinking about that game then. I think Archie Griffin probably already was thinking of it when Ohio State lost by a similar score 17-14 a couple of weeks ago to MSU on the last minute field goal too.

Up until today, that was one of my favorite games I remember attending in person, but now with the similarities of what happened to OSU happening to Iowa today, the memory is tainted some now.

Who the hell cares?

What a weird OP.

Might want to try this on an MSU board where someone might give a shit.

I say that because I DO give a shit of what happened to us as Iowa fans, and saw similarities in what happened to us tonight to what happened to Archie Griffin and OHIO STATE many years ago. Never thought I'd sympathize with Ohio State, as I've worn an old "Ohowihate Ohio State" t-shirt both in East Lansing and in Iowa City in the old days when I dislike them a lot then.

I think Ohio State might have more understanding of my feelings than MSU. Why would MSU fans care more about whether they beat Iowa tonight by the same score and similar circumstances to what Ohio State did then when losing for the first time and their shot at a national championship then too.

This was just my note of having a weird note on being able to identify some with the feelings of Buckeye fans which I never thought I would before (you know the saying when shoe is on the other foot) especially someone like Archie Griffin who was part of the game ceremonies tonight and also directly part of that game then too as a player.

Some stupid game from 40 years ago that didn't even involve Iowa?

Nobody here gives a shit, dude. Get over yourself.

Nice story Archie Griffin was awesome! I hope he was thinking LJ Scott should be the MVP like I was. Go Hawks!

I think you should change your moniker to "Cranky Old Man." Oh, and I think you should stop posting if the rest of them are going to be like your first seven.

The OP has posted here for over a decade, pretty sure a lot of fans here are interested in what he has to say. You joined the site on Friday, presumably just for this game. The game is over so you can go ahead and relinquish your membership. Seriously, I'm tired of reading your crap and I'm guessing almost every other Hawk fan here is, too.

Cook looked like an asshole grabbing it out of Archie's hand and barely even looking at him. This might be salty, but I hope Cook doesn't amount to anything in the NFL. Very unlikeable person.

I definitely noticed he ran over, ripped it out of Archie's hands and then stood right in front of him to block the camera. Pretty disrespectful.

Cook is a great guy who seems a little cocky at times (omg the horror!) and grabbed a trophy aggressively and apologized profusely about it. What a stupid controversy. I can see it being a thing if he didn't apologize.

It is not a controversy. It is just an observation. He did not represent himself very well in that moment.

I saw later that Cook apologized on the BTN post game show to Archie Griffin for how he acted then. Apparently the twitter universe was abuzz about what happened then too. I don't really think that Cook was a bad guy, and was more absorbed in the emotions of the moment without thinking of the big picture then.

The focus of my post wasn't to critique Cook. I guess it was more of a comment of the weirdness of the circumstances I personally felt, and noting that Archie Griffin probably shared a bit of those memories, and me having a different perspective on how I feel now about that game then than I did before I felt that I needed to say. I guess it was more about seeing Archie Griffin as a human being and perhaps seeing more the depth of his feelings at the moment by our shared memories than I had before. It was an added note of respect for him to be a part of that awards presentation that probably had some hard memories for him to think about last night too. I thought also that perhaps some who went through OSU's experience then could identify how many of us feel today about being "so close, but yet so far!..." My gut feeling is that though he handed the award to Cook, he probably had feelings of wanting to shake Beathard's and so many other Iowa players' hands then for what they accomplished and what they were feeling that coincided with feelings of his own.

There was a rumor after the game in East Lansing many years back after the earlier game that Woody Hayes took the outcome of that game so seriously that in addition to punching MSU fans on his way out of the stadium, that he sic'd the NCAA on to MSU coach Denny Stolz and the Spartans then, which is why they got investigated and subsequently got put on probation for a while. I knew one of the daughters of Stolz's coaches in high school then. There was a lot of resentment at MSU over their feelings that this happened over the years after that too. I can understand the hurt Ohio State coaches and players must have felt then from having lost so much in that one game, but I certainly wouldn't advocate that kind of vindictiveness Hayes had then back towards MSU, since I grew up with a family that was as much tied to the Spartans as it was to Iowa. And especially since my Mom passed away a week ago today after I visited her for Thanksgiving two days earlier then that has amplified my feelings and memories of those years too. As a native Iowan who also worked at MSU, she said last Friday to me then that she was more supporting Iowa than MSU to win any game they might play like they did today.

I posted this in the interest of stating that I understand how we felt last night, and how in similar circumstances Ohio State felt then, and saying in effect that we should not let our feelings get in the way of acting respectably as human beings in the coming days and years. There will be other days of greatness for Iowa later I think, and ones where we can celebrate as much as MSU did last night.

Oh boy, the PR era we live in. After people noticed his douche behavior, then he apologizes.

Maybe it isn't a big deal, but it did certainly look bad. And I don't take much from apologies after someone starts taking heat. They are right up there with attorney/PR written apologies for Sports stars in the NFL.

Here, let us tell you what you need to say.
