In an afternoon of notable stats for Keegan.....

Maybe his best game this year in all phases. Struggled early but then turned it on.

What is it with the fouls? We only shot 6 or 8 free throws. Checked the stats and only 9 or 10 fouls called on each team for the game! I didn't notice a lot of uncalled fouls, just seemed like a pretty clean game.

I thought they let both teams play, both teams used hands a bit more than is sometimes called. I'm fine with it, as long as it's called similarly for both teams. And it was. Credit to Iowa for realizing how the game was called and making it more difficult for Minnesota in the second half.

The telltale stat when Iowa is successful is 2-point FG defense. Minnesota made only 13-38 2 pointers. Penn State and Purdue, both losses. PSU made 27 of 47 2's, while Purdue made 17-27. In the Iowa win over PSU, PSU made only 10-26. Seems to equate closely with Keegan staying out of foul trouble.

Maybe this win gets Iowa going in the right direction. Would be good to string a few wins together.

How long does it take for players to realize and act on the reality that it's all about defense and rebounding?
Where was that second half defensive intensity in the first half? Where has it been much of the year and most of Fran's tenure?

Basketball has always been the easiest game in the world, a game where simply playing hard actually can make you a star. Given a modicum of athletic ability, defense and rebounding are about playing hard.

Play hard and win. It seems like a simple enough message. Maybe Iowa finally gets it. And I love that Keegan was more fired up about holding the other team's star to two points on 1-12 shooting than he was about another double-double. That's a model his teammates need to follow for 40 minutes. Shut the other guys down. Keep the other guys off the boards. Win games.

See the Purdue Michigan game Saturday? Only called 4 total fouls all first half. Refs "corrected" that in the 2nd half with 23 more fouls called.
