In Last 3 years, Iowa has scored ONE Offensive TD against Wisconsin

2017 loss to Wisky... 41 throws, 27 runs
- backs 19 carries for 63 yards - 3.3 avg
- receivers & TE yards - 38 !

2016 loss to Wisky... 33 throws, 27 runs
- backs 20 carries for 79 yards - 3.95 avg
- receivers & TE yards - 73 !

2015 win at Wisky... 21 throws, 40 runs
- backs 30 carries for 134 yards - 4.45 avg
- receivers & TE yards - 62 yards

Yet we think throwing the ball is the answer against the 3-4 and with Wisky’s personnel?
Ohio State beat Wisconsin in the B1G Championship game by throwing the football early. This opened up the running game for them also.

Iowa's WRs were no threat against Wisky last year which allowed them to jam our TEs. Number one, I believe the WRs are vastly improved this year. Number two, Wisky is starting three new DBs.

So we disagree. I say throw the ball early. We will see which one of us is right.

It depends on Iowa’s defense, in 2015 they forced 4 turnovers. Iowa will have to average at least 4.5 ypc and be +2 in turnovers to win without throwing the ball.

If Stanley had more than 3 seconds last year in the pocket I’d be surprised. Throwing the ball allows too many bad things to happen. An incompletion, dropped pass, sack or penalty and the drive is over. Run heavy and run often. Take positive yards and continue to wear down the opponent. Make the smaller, quicker backers have to tackle in the hole all game. It may take 2 quarters to establish the run but if we do then the TE can sneak out for some downfield passes. It’s all predicated on establishing and being committed to the run. You are not going to beat them unless you beat them up front. The key is I think we’ve known for a while that our OL is inferior.

In 2014, even with how flawed that Iowa squad was, we had one of our better offensive outings against the Wisconsin D. If memory serves, we had 3 offensive TDs ... 2 passing TDs and a rushing TD.

Part of what helped so much in that game was the fact that we had a quick thinking QB who had experience. Now, as we fast forward to the '18 season, I think that the wealth of experience that Stanley now owns ... and the his football IQ had continued to grow too. I think that those factors will likely help him to make more recognitions concerning Wisconsin's D ... and that WILL likely help us to have better luck against them.

Thus, I think that the Hawks also need to run the ball too ... however, I also feel that the passing game can go a long ways to helping our running game too.

Yes that was an interesting game being there. My memory is we came out and really tried to run the ball just as I am saying we should do always against them. We ran some unbalanced line with a young Ike Boettger reporting in. We were not very effective running and Weismann fumbled first half which was unusual. I think we were down 16-3 at half. Everyone was going crazy wanting the offense opened up which was done second half. We were then able to get over the top multiple times in the passing game scoring 21 pts. Then late in the game with the game on the line Gordon ripped off a big run to seal it.

Again, I’d argue that the insistence that day to establish the run however effective allowed us to take some shots and have success the second half. It caught Wisky totally off guard after what was established first half. That’s how you do it. Establish the run, then hit them over the top. I’m not sure we have scored 24 pts in the past 3 meetings offensively throwing the ball without establishing and sticking with the run. Too much ‘trying to be balanced’ instead of running the ball to set up some shots.

You're preaching to the choir ... where most Iowa fans bitch about our "predictability" ... I call it setting the trend. Thus, just as you indicated, when you break trend ... it can lead to big gains (or throw the D off).

An under-appreciated observation about football is how rare-events can truly swing games. Iowa has a tendency of trying to keep games close ... and then using rare-events to its benefit. Oddly enough, our D is premised largely upon preventing the opposing O from benefiting from rare-events in the game ... forcing the O to execute and be patient. If it doesn't ... then rare-events of the turnover kind can happen ... and benefit the Hawks.

Our "predictability" of establishing the run lulls the D to sleep OR, alternatively, gets them more apt to "cheat" and try to exploit our demonstrated tendencies. Then, that is when the play-action pass can beat them long!

It had only been 1 touchdown in 3 years but it was a drive of 31 yards.. it came off of Desmond king interception for 15 yards..

Hawk central where you got this stat, had the wrong facts aswell

It was a 2 play,15 yd drive at Wisconsin (it came off a Wisconsin turnover). Iowa won that game 10-6
We handed you that game, you wouldn’t have scored if we played four more quarters that season, scored only on Turnovers, where UW stepped on their own dicks.
This season is a different deal.
Pretty new untested defense, we could be vulnerable but we will score often.
Hornibrook is well improved, OL solid and veteran, Jonathon Taylor a Heisman hopeful, best WR group, probably EVER and plenty at TE.
Barry Alvarez grandson Jake Ferguson will get in the mix as a RS TE and he’s a real prospect at 6’5, fleet and can catch too.

First off - part of what should be noted is the following:
  • Iowa has had some of its weakest and/or least experienced groups of WRs in '16 and '17. That makes a team like Iowa that much easier to defend.
  • Iowa was implementing an all-new O in '17.
  • Iowa was breaking in a new QB in '17.
  • Stanley is a Wisconsin native ... and the away game at Camp Randall most certainly got into his head in '17.
  • Wisconsin really has been REALLY GOOD on D ... ever since Aranda first landed at Madison in '13. He really helped elevate a good D into becoming a truly excellent D.

For sure Nate choked at Camp Randall.

It happens. I expect greatness from him on Sept 22nd.

My guess is that BF discussed this with Bill Belichick when the coaches went to Boston.
