What make Lickliter a joke was allowing his
son John to play for the Hawkeyes. It was
absolutely demoralizing to see him on a
basketball floor.
Absolutely agree with that one Lute ... that was sick

what does this have to do with playing in front of an empty gym?Remember when Iowa upset MSU, low scoring game, we won.
Lick hated talent. Palmer got a chance and scored 20 or more in consecutive games and looked decent. Then he was benched and hardly played after that. He couldn't run off Freeman fast enough. He was an absolute program killer.I'm probably misremembering what actually occurred, but I always thought there was something personal between David Palmer and Lickliter. Seemed as though he rode the bench for a number of games and then, when given a chance, strung together two or three pretty darn good games, and then returned to the bench and got very little playing time.
Lick also inherited Tyler Smith but didn’t even bother to talk or meet with him and of course Tyler left.I would take what Lickliter inherited (Alford Left) any day of the week over what Alford inherited.
Alford inherited:
No incoming class - not even a possible recruit.
Jr - Oliver
Sr - Jaacks
Sr - Luerhsman
So - Duez Henderson
So - Injured Kyle Galloway
So - Rod Thompson
Then: Jason Price, Jason Smith, Antonio Ramos, Marcelo Gomes, and John Carl Williams.
Alford scrambled for Rob Griffin and Joe Fermino
Lickliter inherited:
Committed: Gatens HS Sr
JR Tony Freeman
FR Jeff Peterson
FR Jake Kelly
FR Jarryd Cole
JR Cy Tate injured SR year
SR Kurt Looby
SR Seth Gorney
SR Justin Johnson
Then JR Angle, Dan Bohall, and David Palmer. Palmer who fit Lickliter’s system like a square peg in a round hole.
There is no debate who was set up better for long term success between the two and IMO, not much on who inherited the better roster.
You mean the guy that delivered our last btt championship and highest NCAA seed since 87 in his second to last season? No. Not saying alford wasn't an ass or that we were in great spot after 07 but Lick is the guy who gutted the program. Alford didn't run off Tony Freeman who was a good player or let John Lick on team (not to mention play him!!!). If Gatens wasn't local lick wouldn't have even landed him. Yes, Lick is an okay guy but dreadful basketball coach and recruiter post StevensAlford ruined the program and left the worst roster any Iowa coach inherited until F Mac arrived. Lick had no idea of what to do.
Todd is a good guy. How he went from NCoY to the Iowa disaster is beyond me.
As for Evansville, they were awful before Lick was hired and no better later. Talk about a tough recruiting job.

UNI (who Iowa is definitely afraid to play,) is unimaginably horrible since Green got hurt, and went Ofer from three. He is not turning anything around.Lick actually somehow someway seems to be turning it around. Won a couple of non con games, split with Southern Illinois at Southern, who was undefeated, and now beat the purple kitty cats. Who would have thought?

more like 100%He should send 50% of all earnings to brad stevens.
thats embarassing at any level above 12u.
Yeah, after listening to Izzo in that presser - you would have thought one of his family members had passed away!Lickliter was good for some laughs and head scratching decisions. Running off Freeman was the 1st red flag.
During LIckliter's last year, I remember watching multiple games Iowa would score less than 20 points in a half playing slow ball. Even at slow pace, they still managed to be down 20 points at the half. Lickliter B-ball teams were good for a 2nd half snooze...you wouldn't miss anything but the other team playing scrubs to rest their team for next opponent. Lil Lick was the only guy in B1G that made Cully Payne look like a legit B1G PG in comparison.
Poor Gatens got the shaft for most of his career. He was only B1G player on the squad at the end. Give Gatens and his Father credit...they threatened to transfer and brought LIck down..Barta was going to stick with Lickliter another season.
Izzo came out in support of Lickliter after he was fired...lost all respect for Izzo...he basically said Iowa fans should be happy with Lickliter because that was all the better the program could be.
`
Why? Do you feel he gave his all at Iowa. I saw a guy who made no effort recruiting or try to develop relationship with his players. He freaking mailed it inDo I think Lickliter is or was a great coach? NO. However, I would not wish him anything but good luck going forward.

It's hard to believe that in a basketball crazy state like Indiana that Evansville is so bad. I think their decline started when they canned the shirt jerseys and went mainstream with actual jerseys. One would think there is still plenty of talent left in the state even after Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame, Butler and others get theirs.Alford ruined the program and left the worst roster any Iowa coach inherited until F Mac arrived. Lick had no idea of what to do.

Great assistants. How many coaches have won national coach of the year as the worst coach in history. Truly breathtaking accomplishment.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!Todd is a good guy. How he went from NCoY to the Iowa disaster is beyond me.
That about what it looks like.Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!

Well, to be fair, he said it would take seven years to turn it around at Iowa. Maybe it will take longer at Evansville. Keep eating those jellybeans and running off your best player every year........
I met him once at an AAU tournament in Houston at Westfield High right after he got the job. Seemed to be a decent guy. I asked him if he bought Alfords house. He just laughed. But one of the assistants he brought with him was clearly out of his league. The same day I met Tubby Smith who I believe had just got hired by MinnesotaHe was a terrible hire and an awful coach. One of the worst B1G hires in men's b-ball in recent memory.
He wasn't a complete ass, like Alford. I never met him, but I don't think there was any history of bad behavior on his part. He was just a sh!tty coach who played a terrible, unwatchable style of basketball and seemed to be tone deaf to a lot of what was going on around him. I don't wish ill of the guy. I don't really care one way or another as to how his stint at evansville goes.
