Indianapolis to host entire NCAA tourney

I was literally just going to post a new topic/question on this. So no big arenas and everything in one place is confirmed? No fans? Really? Wow, was hoping for a more or 'semi' traditional March Madness with some fans to bring some energy into the games. Why not just allow vaccinated fans to attend? Show the wristband or app and then you can attend. I can't see why you couldn't have a few hundred in the building to make some noise either way. Grrr...
Found this...more info here, given the Colts allowing some fans and others in Indiana, there is hope + this article was from November prior to vaccine news.
NCAA '21 March Madness

Those same sources say a “bubble” will be established similar to that of the NBA’s in Orlando during the previous NBA season.

The playing venues around Indianapolis have not yet been determined. However prior to the pandemic, Lucas Oil Stadium was already scheduled to hold the Final Four on April 3-5, 2021.

I would suppose it's possible that some fans could be allowed if things change between now and March. But at all costs they have to get the tournament in, or the NCAA and many college programs will cease to exists. They already lost one entire tournament and they can't go without the TV revenue this year. Probably best to go forward with no fans, and alter if conditions really, really improve. But at the rate the vaccine is rolling out (very slow) my guess is they just don't want to bother with trying to manage that right now. How do you verify who has and has not been vaccinated? And so on.

A one city "bubble" makes a lot of sense; especially as most colleges are doing online classes, A limited number of fans would be nice; hopefully the NCAA can figure something out.

I’ve got to believe each team will be provided a limited amount of tickets for parents and staff

I highly doubt any general admission tickets would be available

My guess would be 4 sites for games - Lucas Oil Stadium Regional, Bankers Life Fieldhouse Regional, Hinkle Fieldhouse (Butler) Regional, Indiana Farmers Coliseum (IUPUI) Regional.

Game venues won't be as much of a challenge as giving the teams practice space. With 4 games on each court the first 2 days of the tournament, they'll need other facilities to provide practice time. They may need to be creative and work things out with Div II U of Indianapolis, Div III DePauw and/or NAIA Marian U, if not area junior colleges or high schools.

Just announced. Practice on gyms set up in Indiana Convention Center. Each team on their own floow of a hotel with their own meeting rooms/dining area. Games at Lucas Oil, Bankers Life, Hinkle, Indiana Farmers, and Purdue and IU.

Also testing set up for all participants. Sounds like a solid plan, hopefully it works.

agreed.

sounds like the decisions on fans has yet to be made.

Sort of a bubble environment. They are going to have to lock down the teams pretty tight. And the service people will need to be tested and monitored, too.

Gold star on your chest. Duh

Evidently they're not sure whether you still may be able to spread the virus even though you've been vaccinated. They are encouraging those that have taken the vaccine to continue wearing masks. I wouldn't be attending, but I would hope that parents and family member would be allowed in the arenas. If you watch games on TV now, it appears that some universities have rather lax regulations regarding letting fans into the games and others, like Iowa, are pretty strict.

So what's the point of getting the vaccine then?

Not calling you out, genuinely curious if anyone has an answer

Maybe stupid question...but are they going to even bother with conference tournaments this year? I haven’t looked it up so sorry in advance.

I guess I could see them going w regular season champs getting the AQ the rest old fashioned selection committee style.

I'm sure the conferences will want those games for the revenue as well.....

I don't know why they wouldn't as they are already playing the games.

This makes about as much sense as can be expected at this time.
Limit attendees to those who are directly a part of the program and immediate family of players. Test, test and more tests. Make it as much a bubble as possible, meaning that you do not leave your designated areas and no one comes into them who hasn't been cleared.
I REALLY want to see a tourney. Strict adherence to a bubble protocol is the best way to have that happen.

i wouldn't be surprised to see the actual start date of the tournament change from the normal Thursday to Saturday. Some of the smaller conferences are not doing daily testing. They will want to get those teams in Indy on a Monday or Tuesday, start testing immediately and do several days of testing to ensure that all players are COVID-free. There may even be some teams that have to forfeit if too many positives on their roster. Once the teams are in Indy, it's basically practice, hotel rooms and games. Makes for a boring 3 weeks if a team stays in to the Final 4 but such is life right now.

For those saying "the kids are amateurs." True, but the only way to let them compete for a championship is to do something like this. If I were a college player, I would be fine if it gave me a chance to compete and not just cancel everything like last year.
