Iowa 2017 and the B1G West

Does Wisconsin repeat? Not the subject of Mike Hlas' column this morning, but ultimately that is the storyline for the B1G West in 2017.

In 2016, Iowa held the role of Wisconsin, as defending champion, after a 12-0 regular season in 2015.

How much better will the offense be when Akrum Wadley removes the red jersey?

What impact will that have on either QB Tyler Wiegers or Nathan Stanley?

I am pleased Drew Cook moved to TE. What happened to Ryan Boyle last year doesn't matter, thinking about someone's comment in another thread. Ryan Boyle is clearly the #3 QB for now. Hlas talked about Wadley and Cook in his column today.

The future is bright for Iowa Football. However, the schedule also includes three solid programs in the B1G cross-over games. Wisconsin will get Maryland, at IU and Michigan in cross-over games. Last year, head to head was critical and it will likely be in 2017.

In 2012, Iowa debuted an Air Force transfer, walk on at RB. In 2017, our FS will be a former AF recuit, who simply choose to walk-on at Iowa.

Junior FS Jake Gervase earned his scholarship in January. Talk about 'Next Man In' story for 2017.

Next man in will be critical for the 2017 Hawkeyes, but we have plenty of returning letterwinners on a young team, with a good mix of veterans.

Iowa should be solid on the offensive line and in the front 7 on defense.

The questions ultimately are playmakers and special teams. However, Spring Drills finish up, the glass appears far from less full, when Iowa counts Akrum Wadley, Matt VandeBerg, Jon Wisnieski, Peter Pekar and Drake Kullick as seniors who should be back this fall to fill in spots, manned by youngsters in the Spring.

Also, 4-6, maybe more newcomers will have an opportunity to fill spots in various units.

Sophomore TE Noah Fant is another name to be looking forward to watching, along with red shirt freshman TE TJ Hockenenson.

Iowa had two strong TEs in 2015, when they won the B1G West. Wisconsin enjoys the fruit of a strong running game and usually solid TE play.

Iowa vs. Wisconsin in Madison should be a good one. Win that one, and the 2017 season could be an exciting one.
