IOWA CITY — The fans were booing the new-look Iowa offense in the first quarter of the first game, a 40-0 season-opening throttling of Illinois State. Really, they were.

After showing what he and the Tim Lester offense are capable of this week, though, Cade McNamara just might have given the notoriously boisterous Kinnick Stadium crowd what it's been asking for all along: an offense to believe in.

McNamara didn't mention the boos in his postgame conference after Iowa's victory over the Redbirds. He clearly didn't let them affect him during the game, either, finishing with a 21-for-31, 251-yard, three-touchdown performance in the win and putting an exclamation point on his road back from last season's quad injury and subsequent season-ending torn ACL.

"Picturing myself having moments like this is what got me through rehab," McNamara said. "What it [would be] like to possibly go out there as 100% again."

If that's not 100%, God help the rest of the Big Ten, because McNamara's second-half stats almost beggar belief for an Iowa quarterback: 13-for-14, 177 yards, and all three of the aforementioned scores. His QB rating for the second half? A mere 269.8.

That? That'll do just fine, in Iowa City or any other stadium in the country.

"I'm super excited for Cade; he's come a long way after the injury," said tight end Luke Lachey, himself a returnee from a 2023 season-ending leg injury. Lachey finished with 63 yards and a game-high six catches in the win.

slow the roll a bit, Adam.

There was booing yesterday? I was unable to watch the first 3 quarters yesterday so I missed that part. I mean, I get being frustrated but after 1 quarter seems a bit quick on that. And just to be clear, I'm not against booing, especially now that the players are all basically paid to play. But I would have given them at least until the 2nd half to see if they could fix whatever issues they were having.

There was a lot of grumbling and some boos as the 1st half wore on...

Fans have PTSD from the last few years of offensive incompetence, so I don't blame a single fan for saying "not this sh*t again".

Cause that 1st half looked like the same ole sh*t again. Definitely a great 2nd half and something to build on.

Context should play a part in expectation. F the booers. Time to settle in is not too much to expect.

Must have been under their breath boos because I couldn't hear them on tv.

Write your own article. I agree with his opinion. No slow rolling needed.
I agree with him too. Cade played with a lot of confidence. Best game by an Iowa QB we've seen in couple of years! Talk about needed medicine. If he continues to play well this team will have a great season. But "god help the rest of the Big Ten"? It's one game, against an FCS team.

There's my article. It's an opinion forum, dude.

Also, f*** Iowa State

Agreed some of the fans seemed to have an itchy trigger finger and maybe were a little too unrealistic, but hopefully Lester will make us all forget the dark days of BF play calling at Kinnick…😉

The most exciting offense in years, certainly since Nate Stanley's junior season. It took a half a to get going but the 2nd half was very encouraging while still showing what I anticipate we will see throughout the season.

I know I's winning the bet that Iowa 2024 doubles its offensive scoring over 2023.

I still don't think Cade will finish the year as the starter. And not because of injury. Time will tell.

There were some audible groans but there were a few boos from the lubricated student section.
I don't boo but it was frustrating to watch CM refuse to throw to any open reciever over 10 yards out. They may have run 5 different plays all half.

No, I heard them too. Never got to full scale but if the second half was like the first, they would've been very apparent.

In the end, hopefully we've got it figured out enough for us to not have to hear it again this year.

I heard the boos while watching the game on TV, but I wasn't sure whether the fans were booing the offensive team, or the decision to try the field goal instead of going for it on 4th down.
