iowa #7 in coaches poll

Laid an egg on the road, and still kept it close against a top 10 team, and smoked a poor NW team. Not sure I see the 4 spot drop, but really, in the grand scheme of things, does it matter at this point?

I believe they were four last week in this poll so they dropped 3 but I do agree with ya. Just keep winning hawks!

We shot 20% from 3, 60% from the free throw line, and only had 9 assists.
We average 17 assists a game, 40% from 3, and 73% from the FT line.

Kind of looks like laying an egg.

Against a top ten team on their home court. Not everyone is going to lie down for the hawks and let them have their way.

We did not lay an egg.
We didn't shoot well, partly due to MD defense, and partly due to having the worst shooting night ever.

MD moving to #3 actually shows great respect for Iowa, and if you look at the points, there's not a lot separating #3 from #7. I also think if we'd kept the spread around 25 against NW, it probably would have reflected in the polls. Most probably saw a 6 pt loss and a 15 pt win at home vs. Northwestern, not all that impressive. Just keep winning Hawks.

Throw in the fact that our best player had one of his worst games all year, and I think this does indeed qualify as "laying an egg" (metaphorically, as markfromj is very picky about how things are worded).

I agree that laying an egg usually happens against a lesser opponent, but our stat line shows that we had a terribly off night. So, while it might not be how some of you could describe the game, it certainly wasn't that we shot 40% from 3, made our average % from the line, and lost a 5-7 point game.

Apparently everyone was waiting for Maryland to get their "signature" win.

I think the larger point is that Iowa didn't play anything close to its best game (some of it certainly due to Maryland, but some of it self-inflicted) and still was in the game to the last minute in one of the most hostile venues out there against a really good team. That's certainly my silver-lining spin in the loss.

I agree 100%. We played what statistically was our worst, or close to our worst game of the year, on the road, against a top 10 team, and only lost by a handful of points. I can handle that.

I was predicting we would probably drop to about #17, so things weren't nearly as bad as what I figuring they would be.

The football team, after being accosted nationally for a weak schedule, stayed in the top 10 from #3 after losing their last two games on a national stage. Those last two games accounted for about 15% of their total season schedule....and the last loss was a woodshed game. The basketball team has already stacked up more quality wins (including big road wins against ranked teams) than anyone else to date in the country and went on the road to a top 10 team and was in the game to the last minute. There was no reason to think that Iowa was going to plummet in the rankings.

The media consistently talks about the MSU and Purdue wins but fail to mention that we also beat a surging Witchita State team that is correctly ranked.

Also our loss to Dayton is looking better and better (for a loss)

And Indiana getting NO respect. Love it!

It's not really about respect, it's about resume. Indiana's best wins are (by KenPom) against #31 Notre Dame and #47 Creighton. On top of that, they have two losses outside the Top 50 - #120 Wake Forest and #91 UNLV.

By comparison, the other ranked B1G teams:
  • Maryland: Not a ton of great wins, but they do have wins over KenPom #2 Iowa and #26 UConn. Additionally, they have no bad losses, losing only to #4 UNC, #6 Michigan St. and #32 Michigan.
  • Iowa: Several wins over KenPom top 50 (#6 MSU x2, #12 Wichita St., #13 Purdue x2, #41 Florida St.). Iowa has no losses outside the KenPom Top 40: #37 Dayton, #31 Notre Dame, #14 Iowa State and #9 Maryland.
  • Michigan St.: Wins over #7 Louisville, #9 Maryland, #15 Kansas, #22 Florida and #39 Providence. The losses are twice to Iowa and then #53 Wisconsin and #96 Nebraska.
  • Purdue: Wins over #22 Florida, #32 Michigan, #38 Vandy and #49 Pittsburgh. Their only loss outside the KP Top 50 is #134 Illinois.
Right now, Indiana is well-positioned if they play well down the stretch. If they finish 14-4 or better, they're going to get some quality wins to beef up their resume. However, if they fall back to 12-6 or 11-7 in the 2nd half, then they're not going to have a lot of margin for error on the tourney resume.
