Iowa -8.5 vs Illinois State

This irrational fear of Illinois State reminds me of all the posters that wrung their hands and fearfully predicted Pitt would beat the Hawks last year.
Lol...because we all shoulda known our backup QB bring us back in the second half...and that our D would come thru...

People must have watched a different Pitt game last year, because the vitriol in here has gone well beyond hyperbole.

Their QB threw 0 TDs and an Int. Yes, Conner went for 150, but he did that a lot, and it took him 30 carries. They had one receiver make the big plays, none for TDs. Both teams punted 3 times.

It was 17-7 at half. Iowa basically drove the field their first opportunity in the second.

Give the credit to CJ, sure, but stop with the bullshit "kicked our ass" nonsense. CJ threw for 100 yards and no TDs, the entire team played better in the 2nd, he wasn't a savior.

They ran the ball down our throats the entire 1st half. Go watch it again. It was par for the course with last year's rush D.

Yes, they did run it down our throats. Conner is extremely good, evidenced by the records he broke.

Then CJ came out as LBer in the second half and largely shut it down.

He sparked the team and completely changed the momentum of the game.

Only someone as clueless and incompetent as Kirk could fail to see that.

Go rewatch it--our O had four posessions in the second half, one of those pure clock killer. I'll take 17 points every three posessions all year long. The 7-of-8 passing wasn't bad either. Yah it wouldna mattered if our D hadn't come thru--kind of a given when Yer down a couple scores...

Vegas is not into predicting which team wins by how many points. Their purpose is to get even money. Naturally the average better know very little about the two teams. They see a B1G team playing a FCS team and they probably take the favorite B1G team. I think the line is should probably be in the 5-7 range with Iowa as the favorite.

Let's do it this way, one question at a time:

How many points do people think Iowa scores on Illinois State?

I'd guess 34.

I could go with that. I would guess it is more like 24-27 points for Iowa, but I can see how it goes to 34 or higher.

I am guessing Iowa will really want to use this game to establish the run and build confidence in the line. I think Illinois State will be stacking the box and keying on the run. I see a lot of 2nd and 7 and 3rd and 3 situations for the Hawks (and the clock ticking a lot). I don't think KF is going to use the first game to prove to everybody that CJ can still wing it around.

I think it could lead to a thin margin for error, especially if Illinois State goes all out (take your pick of 4th down attempts, fake punts, on-side kicks, etc). For some reason, this feels to me like a 24-21 type of game, maybe 27-20. Not necessarily ever in doubt, never really too scary, although nobody will be happy with it either. Classic KF game of controlling the clock and trying to control the field position as well.

They return a few players on defense after looking at who they lost on D they won't be as good on D. They lost several DBs and several DLs. They lost their really good TE and WR on offense. Roberson isn't the best passer. I expect if Iowa stops the run it could be a blow out.

Iowa is way better than people think? Please explain why. I can't wait to hear.

Frydaze been a while to answer you I also feel this squad is undervalued. I'm of the believe that GD finally has his guy and will make teams who stack the box on us pay for the first time being here. I also like our RB situation. Good combo of sped and power I really like Tavian Smith and our TEs and OL are rarely poor. Hearing good things about Mitchell out of the backfield on 3rd downs. I believe we are 3-5 points north of 28 avg.

I believe our defense will be much improved better secondary and LBs than last year hopefully as good of DL never was 100% sold on Carl Davis.

Like our kicker and kickoffs. Our punting sigh? Who the heck knows probably near last in the BIG. How we keep failing there is baffling?

I call 8 wins. Not spectacular but a decent season.
