Iowa Assistant Billy Taylor hired at Elon

I’m guessing it will be Courtney and I assume that’s a good move….first, he’s apparently a strong recruiter. Second, he knows the school and all the dynamics of the players and what they have to deal with. Third, he knows Fran’s system and (assuming Fran promotes him) he can jump right in….hit the ground running. Loyalty is, or can be, a really good thing when it’s based on performance in a professional relationship. Last but not least he most likely has a relationship with the current players that Coach Taylor was recruiting. The staff has probably known about the job situation for a while and has planned for it.

So, if that happens……does that result in an opening for Connor to start his coaching career and open another roster spot? I’m guessing not BUT it would give him a chance to be in the program with his dad and eventually BOTH brothers.

It's not like we have been raking in a barrel of talent from Chicago, or Illinois for that matter.

I’m super surprised we haven’t made an impact in the Twin Cities. Wisconsin gets a lot of their players from Minnesota.

Is player-coach something that could be possible in today's NCAA?

I'm not saying it would be a good or bad thing. But if you hire a young man to be a coach (or even a grad assistant), and he still has eligibility, is there any reason he can't use it? (Especially with the new NIL rules.)

EDIT: As I think more about this, it might be a really dumb idea, as schools could simply "hire" top talent as "assistant coaches" and make direct payments of massive salaries. Then again, as noted above with the relaxed rules about compensating athletes, it might be that anything is possible.

Did Spearaw go somewhere?

Again, Fran has always had a former college head coach on his staff. Hiring Jeff Horner to replace Billy Taylor would keep the record intact.

Billy Taylor, who is moving on, served as the head men's basketball coach at Lehigh University from 2002 to 2007 and Ball State University from 2007 to 2013.

Kirk was head coach at UCF.

Dillard received his first head coaching opportunity at Indiana State (1994-97)

I am not surprised you don't understand.

To spell it out for you: Jeff Horner is the current head coach of Truman State University. Fran has always had former head coaches as assistants.

Get it now, dummy?

Your post is nonsense.

"Fran has always had a former college head coach on his staff. Hiring Jeff Horner to replace Billy Taylor would keep the record intact."

So would hiring @Roy L Fuchs because Speraw and Dillard are still on the staff.

Did you mean, 'Fran only has former head coaches as assistants" ?

Which still doesn't make sense because of Andrew Francis.

You are wrong. From 2003-05, Andrew Francis served as the head coach at Mt. St. Vincent College, compiling a 26-27 record.

So, to answer my own question, to date, it does appear that Fran has always had only former college head coaches on his staff.

Im not wrong. Sorry, a losing record as a D3 women's coach doesnt count.

It seems like we've heard good things about Courtney as a recruiter in his limited role that he has had up until now. It will be interesting to see if he takes that up a notch and makes a difference when he can have more access and do visits with recruits and their parents.

Courtney will hopefully help us land T.J. Power , who Iowa offered on Aug 27, 2020

TJ is from Shrewsbury, MA

He officially visited the weekend of Oct 8, 2021.

According to Rivals, Iowa is the first school he visited.

TJ Power (2023), Dasonte Bowen (2022), Josh Ogundele (2020) & Iowa Assistant Coach Courtney Eldridge (1998) are all part of BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club).
