Friday - vs Alabama State - 12pm - Gallagher starting for Iowa
Saturday - vs Alabama State - 4pm - TBA
Sunday - vs Morehead State - 12pm - Drake Robison starting for Iowa

Robison is the Ole Miss transfer.

Also, TBA on Saturday has be concerned. Is Eldred injured? I know Heller said last week that if he hadn't been for the rain delay that Eldred could have come back out. Anybody know?

Yeah, he's dealing with an ulnar nerve injury, apparently.

Great win! 15 hits to go with 7 walks. Nice pitching as well. It's nice to have some power in the lineup. Last year it was game number 8 when the Hawks hit their third home run.
I think they only had 2 or 3 as a team for the season Dahm's last year. They were last or next to last in all af D1 baseball.

Iowa Baseball loses to Alabama State 4-3.

Iowa gave up a couple unearned runs and a two run HR. Offensively, Iowa didn't really do a whole lot.

I know it's early, but this is a BAD loss.

Also a concern is our offense. I happened to look at our batting averages and outside of three guys, they are not good at all. Hopefully things improve.

Iowa defeats Morehead State 14-7 today. A 2-1 weekend you will take every time.

Mason McCoy was 2-4 with 4 RBI
Chris Whelan was 3-4 with 2 RBI
Ben Norman was 1-1 with 2 RBI

Drake Robison got the start and pitched four innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs.
Shane Ritter pitched one inning giving up two earned.
Sam Lizarraga pitched one inning giving up one earned.

Zach Daniels came in and pitched three shutout innings which is a positive sign after last weekend. He allowed two hits and gets credited with the W.

It also looks like Iowa added a home game on Tuesday at 3pm vs Cornell.

Iowa is 4-3 on the season now and will go to Minneapolis next weekend.

Why is this a bad loss? Alabama State was an NCAA Regional team in 2016. Splitting with them was fine. Morehead State's RPI currently is 41 (I know, it's early) but that was a good Sunday win.

Iowa is doing fine with the early season schedule. USF is 7-1 and has a win over Florida State and just swept Miami Ohio 4 games. Iowa gave them their only loss so far. Last year Iowa got in a huge hole in the non-conference that made it next to impossible to get a NCAA bid. Good non-con opponents over the next few weeks. Hopefully Iowa can pile up some more wins so that a good conference record gets Iowa in the NCAA's.

Regional team? Yes

From an RPI stand point, it hurts. Even though it's early. As many of these games as you can win early to boost your RPI will make life easier come conference play.

Well yes, by that standard every loss hurts. But it wasn't a bad loss, in terms of just giving the game away against an inferior opponent. It's baseball, you don't win every one. Iowa played last weekend without its No. 2 pitcher (Eldred didn't pitch). Mish-mash of bullpen arms held the opponent to 4 runs. That is good, shows the depth of the staff. Hopefully Eldred can come back and pitch. If he's down for any length of time, that would severely test the pitching depth.

I get what you're saying. I guess I look at it from the 2015 season and what I know about the baseball RPI. If you're a B1G school with any hope of an at-large bid then you have to win those games and pad your RPI as much as possible.

Agreed on the RPI impact. The issue in 2016 was that Iowa didn't win hardly any of the games against the good non-con opponents. Iowa got swept at Missouri State and Dallas Baptist, and then lost games to Indiana State, Nebraska-Omaha, Seton Hall and lost 2 of 3 to Southern Illinois. That put Iowa way behind the 8-ball and made getting an at-large bid impossible. Splitting so far against South Florida, Alabama State and Morehead State has put Iowa in a good spot. The next 3 weeks are important, games with Hawaii, ORU, Minnesota, Villanova, Lehigh and K-State.
