Iowa Central punter

Ryan Gersonde averaged 42.5 this year without an 85 yarder to skew the average.

We're talking about a sample size of 79 vs 13 and you want to talk about skewing averages.

Gersonde punted in only 3 games.

He averaged 37.7 (3 punts) and 35.2 (5 punts) in two of those games.

The Northwestern game he benefitted from favorable wind and averaged 52.2 on 5 punts.

Context helps.

Here is the thing, we had awesome kick coverage, awesome punt coverage, a terrific FG unit and did a nice job on special teams "trick" plays....

But we had very poor Punting as a whole. So is that the coaches fault or did our partners underachieve?

We had great special teams play this year.

Iowa allowed the 5th (out of 130) lowest yards per kick return allowed this year:

Our net punting was 77th out of 129 teams:

I think the coaches and players maximized our punting to get it to 77th nationally. We had punters who didn't have a good leg, so we did the rugby, covered well, and everything else possible to get a decent outcome.

Yet you have ZERO context about the op's punter. Did he punt in a vacuum? Were 25 percent of his punts shanks?

You're right. Context helps:rolleyes:

Couple of thoughts:
1. I understand people’s frustration with our punting. It has to improve. Those expectations have been made clear to our present roster. Bowl game practice has been going well in this regard. The key step to make is to carry over practice performance into the game performance.
2. Ryan G is very good punter. Although his sample size (UI game performance) has been small, I think he’s capable of excellence. Unfortunately, his back has been ailing so Miguel has been taking second team reps and doing very well.
3. From a personnel perspective (I have zero inside info here, just speaking as a fan) UIFB staff can’t use another scholarship spot on another punter while they already have one on scholarship. It’s too soon to tell if Ryan can step into a starting role (or not). Until that decision-point is reached, the best the UIFB will probably be able to offer is a preferred walk-on.
4. I suspect, tho again with NO inside info, that today’s game performance will go a long way in determining whether or not staff offer any new punters. I hope Colten kicks ass and takes the reigns firmly in hand!

Post "like" is not strong enough to express my appreciation for your post.

Thank you for your perspective!

I'm not sure what you're talking about? First of all I am the OP.

I think the fact Williams was just awarded as the top punter in NJCAA as a true freshman is significant context added pertaining to his abilities. I think the fact that he is from Eastern Iowa and an Iowa fan makes him worthy of a look by our coaching staff and might be reasonable to bring him onboard as a walk-on. He still has one year to go at ICCC and won't be available until 2019 but he should certainly be worthy of strong consideration especially if our punters continue to struggle with consistency.

His availability may be different depending on his status out of high school, if he qualified out of high school he could be on campus at Iowa for 2nd semester. As far as finishing 77th in punting, that isn't even the lowest ranked unit on the team.

Well put. I agree with you.

May not be the lowest, but the easiest to FIX. Literally need ONE player change to change this greatly.
