Impressive list. Honest question - how many of the national champions from Iowa won their title this millennium? My sense, being a fan of wrestling since the 80s, is that the majority were pre-2000s. So the next logical question, if my first observation is correct, is why the drop off? Was the level of high school wrestling in Iowa pre-2000 that much better than the rest of the country? Did Coach Gable have that much influence in developing talent? Has the level of high school wrestling in the rest of the country gotten that much better since 2000? I am not trolling at all - honest questions.

BTW, congrats to the Hawks for a great tournament. Spencer Lee is a beast and I am very much looking forward to him wrestle over the next 3 years.

Wow, for some reason I thought Gable pulled a lot more out of state recruits. Almost like the Iowa high school system needs a shot in the arm.

Watch your tongue. Iowa high school wrestling is as good as ever around these parts.
Iowa is great wrestling but due to the low population there just aren't enough clubs that freco on a national level. It takes parents with serious money for that and there just as many as the other states. The scrambling and better technique elevates the more mat time. Add 4-6 season of freestyle (Jr high to high school) and that is a very advanced kid.

High population states have more year round wrestlers than Iowa. Other than 3A schools, kids do other sports, which makes thier development less.
